Of all the foundational fabric concepts, grain is the one most often misunderstood and most punishing when ignored. Cut a pattern piece off-grain and the finished garment will twist, sag or pull no matter how accurately you sewed it. Understanding grain, the selvage that defines it and the bias that runs across it gives you control over how every piece behaves.

The Three Grains of Woven Cloth
Woven fabric has three distinct directions, each behaving differently. The lengthwise grain, or warp, runs parallel to the selvage and is the strongest, most stable direction with the least stretch. The crosswise grain, or weft, runs perpendicular to the selvage and has slightly more give. The bias runs diagonally at forty-five degrees to both and has the most stretch of all.

Finding the Selvage and Squaring the Grain
The selvage is the finished, tightly woven edge that runs along both lengthwise sides of the cloth. It will not fray and often carries print or pinholes. Because the selvage is by definition parallel to the warp, it is your reference for locating lengthwise grain.
Fabric can arrive off-grain if it was rolled or finished under tension, meaning the crosswise threads no longer sit at a right angle to the selvage. To check, pull a single weft thread or tear across the width and see if the line is square to the selvage. If not, gently stretch the fabric on the bias to coax the grain back into alignment before cutting.

Why the Grainline Arrow Exists
Every pattern piece carries a grainline arrow. Its job is to tell you which direction of the cloth the piece should run along, almost always the lengthwise grain for stability. Aligning the printed arrow parallel to the selvage ensures the piece hangs from its strongest, least stretchy direction so the garment keeps its shape under the pull of gravity and movement.
When you cut a digital pattern, the grainline is embedded in the file. In a DXF AAMA or PLT file the grain reference is part of the piece geometry; in a PDF tiled pattern it is printed as an arrow you align to the selvage. Ignoring it is the fastest way to undo precise drafting.
The Power of the Bias
Cutting on the bias unlocks the fabric's diagonal stretch and fluidity. A bias-cut garment skims the body, drapes in soft vertical folds and moves with the wearer, which is why bias slip dresses and cowl necklines are so elegant. The cost is difficulty: bias edges stretch as you handle them, seams can grow, and hems drop unevenly.
Bias is also used deliberately in small doses. Bias-cut binding hugs curved edges smoothly because it stretches to follow them, which is why neckline and armhole bindings are almost always cut on the bias.
Handling Bias Without Distortion
- 1.Let bias-cut garments hang for twenty-four to forty-eight hours before hemming so the cloth drops and stabilizes.
- 2.Support the weight of bias pieces while sewing so the fabric does not stretch under its own weight at the needle.
