Yet interfacing is one of the most confusing areas for makers, with dozens of products and little clear guidance on which to use where.

Why Interfacing Exists

The goal is always support that suits the fabric. Interfacing that is too heavy makes a soft fabric stiff and unnatural; too light, and the detail flops. The art is matching the interfacing to the fabric so the supported area feels like a firmer version of the same cloth.

Fusible Versus Sew-In

The first decision is application method. Fusible interfacing has a heat-activated adhesive on one side and is bonded to the fabric with an iron, which is fast, convenient and the most common choice for modern garments. Sew-in interfacing has no adhesive and is stitched or basted into the seam, offering a softer result and being the only safe option for heat-sensitive or textured fabrics.

Fusibles can change a fabric's hand slightly and risk bubbling if applied poorly or if the bond fails in washing. Sew-ins preserve the fabric's natural hand and suit tailoring, delicate silks, and fabrics like sequins or heavily textured cloth that cannot take an iron.

Nonwoven interfacing is a bonded web with no grain, so it can be cut in any direction and does not fray. It is economical and stable but can feel papery and may not move naturally with the fabric, making it best for small areas and crafts rather than fine garments.

Choosing the Right Weight

Interfacing comes in weights from feather-light to heavy. The reliable principle is to choose interfacing slightly lighter than the fabric, or at most equal to it, so the supported area firms up without becoming a different material. A heavy interfacing on a lightweight shirting will overwhelm the cloth.

When unsure, always test. Fuse or baste a sample to a scrap of your actual fabric, then feel and flex it. The supported scrap should hold the shape you want while still relating to the fabric's character. This five-minute test prevents ruining a garment with the wrong choice.

Applying Fusible Interfacing Correctly
