Grading for Production: Building a Commercial Size Range

Grading is the process of scaling a perfected base-size pattern up and down into a full range of sizes. It is one of the most technical and most commercially important steps in apparel development, because a beautifully drafted sample size means nothing if the other sizes fit poorly.

Good grading is not uniform scaling. Bodies do not grow proportionally in every dimension, so grading applies measured, differential increments at specific pattern points. Getting it right is the difference between a range that fits and a range that returns.

What grading is and is not

Grading increases or decreases a pattern by defined amounts at defined points, following a set of grade rules tied to a size chart. It is not photographic enlargement; an evenly scaled pattern distorts fit because, for example, a neckline does not grow at the same rate as a waist.

The base size, sometimes called the sample size, is graded outward in both directions, which keeps the most extreme sizes closer to the proven middle.

Size charts come first

You cannot grade without a size chart, because grade increments are derived from the difference between sizes in that chart. The size chart should reflect your actual target customer, ideally validated against real body data, not simply copied from a competitor.

Decide the range deliberately. A wider range serves more customers but multiplies grading, sampling and inventory complexity, so it should be a strategic choice.

Grade rules and increments

Grade rules specify how much each point on the pattern moves, in which direction, per size step. These increments come from the differences in the size chart distributed across the relevant pattern points. Mature operations maintain libraries of grade rules they reuse and refine.

The skill is in distribution: deciding how a given size increment is allocated across the front, back, sleeve and other pieces so the whole garment grows coherently.

Grading digital patterns

Common grading mistakes

The usual failures are scaling uniformly instead of differentially, grading from a flawed base, neglecting curved areas like armholes and necklines, and never sampling the extreme sizes. Each produces a range that looks fine on paper and fits badly on bodies.

Another trap is over-extending a range beyond what the base block can safely support, where fit breaks down at the edges.

From graded patterns to production

Once graded, the size set feeds your tech pack's points-of-measure chart, your markers for cutting, and your 3D fit checks. A correct grade is the bridge between a single approved sample and a manufacturable, sellable collection.
