When To Wear

  • As a nightie or lounge top at home.
  • In summer heat, on its own or over a swimsuit at the beach.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Slightly flared from the bust, without a waist seam.

Length: Short, to the upper thigh.

Neckline: Straight across the front at the upper bust; halter straps go up around the neck.

Straps: Four straps cut on the bias from the main fabric, 3 cm wide and about 70 cm long, stitched into narrow tubes. Their length and position are adjusted on the body before they are caught into the facing seam.

Front: One piece with bust darts pressed upwards.

Back: One piece with a deep V neckline, crossed by the straps.

Finishing: Front and back facings along the whole upper edge, topstitched 0.5–0.7 cm from the overlocked edge; turned and topstitched hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Bias-cut tube straps, fitting the straps on the body, and a facing stitched around corners and curves on slippery silk.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Mark and stitch the bust darts on the front. Press darts upwards.
  2. Stitch the side seams. Press seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  3. Stitch the side seams of the facings, press seam allowances open and serge. Serge the bottom edge of the facing.
  4. Cut four bias binding strips from the main fabric, 3 cm wide and approximately 70 cm long. Fold them in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long edge 0.5 cm from the edge. Turn the straps right side out and straighten.
  5. Put on the garment and adjust the length and position of the straps according to the sketch.
  6. Place the facing and the garment right sides together and stitch the upper edge, inserting the straps. Clip the seam allowances at curves and corners, turn the facing right side out, straighten, and press. Topstitch the facing to the garment 0.5 – 0.7 cm from the serged edge.
  7. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
