Tech. Description

Spaghetti Strap Gathered Short Nightie

A women's babydoll top cut from just two pieces, a front and a back, gathered by decorative elastic along the top edge and under the bust. The top and bottom edges are finished with a narrow rolled hem in contrasting thread, and it hangs from ready-made straps.

When To Wear

  • As a nightie or sleep top in warm weather.
  • As lingerie, with the contrast trim and a small bow at the front.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Gathered at the bust between two rows of elastic, then falling loose and flared from the underbust.

Length: Short, falling well below the hips.

Neckline: Straight top edge across front and back, with a small frill above the elastic.

Front: One piece with no seams or darts. An optional bow made from trim is sewn under the bust at the centre front.

Back: One piece, gathered in the same way as the front.

Waist: Elastic stitched on under the bust; its length equals your underbust measurement. The elastic at the top edge equals your overbust measurement.

Finishing: Side seams pressed towards the back and serged. Top and hem edges finished with a dense rolled hem in contrasting thread. The elastic is stretched as it is stitched on so the gathers spread evenly.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two pattern pieces, two side seams, rolled-hem edges and elastic stitched on flat.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative elastic in a contrasting colour
  • Contrasting thread for the rolled hems
  • Ready-made straps in a contrasting colour
  • Decorative trim for the bow

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back – 1 piece
  • 2. Front – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch side seams. Press seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  2. Serge the upper and lower edges with a narrow, dense rolled hem, using contrasting thread.
  3. Measure the required length of elastic trim strip: one piece equals the overbust circumference (measuring tape runs horizontally across the back, touching the back corners of the armpits, then along the armpits; in front, it runs above the base of the breasts). The second piece equals the underbust circumference (measuring tape runs horizontally around the torso below the base of the breasts).
  4. Mark the lines for stitching the elastic trim strip along the upper edge and under the bust. Stitch the trim strip to the garment, stretching it and evenly distributing the gathers.
  5. Attach the straps. If desired, form a bow from decorative trim strip and attach it according to the sketch.
