Tech. Description

Sheer Babydoll Top

A women's hip-length babydoll top on ready-made straps, cut from sheer silk. A gathered front insert sits across the bust, the straight upper edge is held by elastic, and a satin ribbon threaded through a casing at the low waist ties at the side.

When To Wear

  • As sleepwear or loungewear in warm weather.
  • As a summer top over a camisole or with shorts.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose and straight from the bust, drawn in at the low waist by the ribbon casing, with a short frill below.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Straight upper edge at front and back, with elastic sewn into the turned allowance by zigzag.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, gathered along its curved upper edge and joined to a front insert that is gathered at the armhole edges. The insert can be cut from a border-print or embroidered fabric so that the decorative edge finishes the top.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Waist: A 4 cm wide casing topstitched on the right side at the low waist, open at the short ends, with a satin ribbon threaded through it.

Finishing: Narrow rolled hem; ready-made straps sewn on at front and back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Only three pieces, but gathering, applied elastic and a rolled hem on sheer silk need careful handling.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin, sheer silk fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Ready-made straps
  • Satin ribbon, 1.5 cm wide
  • Decorative elastic

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back — 1 piece on fold
  • Front — 1 piece on fold
  • Front insert – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

Tip: You can cut the front insert from a fabric with a border print. Otherwise, the upper edge should either be serged with a dense stitch or finished with a hemmed seam. In the latter case, the front insert should be cut with a seam allowance along the upper edge.

  1. Stitch with loosely tensioned stitches along the armhole edges of the front insert at a distance of 0.8 cm from the edge and gather to the specified amount.
  2. Stitch with loosely tensioned stitches along the concave edge of the front at a distance of 0.8 cm from the edge and gather. Attach the front insert to the front, press the seam allowance upwards and serge.
  3. Stitch the side edges. Press the seam allowances towards the back and serge.
  4. Serge the seam allowance of the upper edge of the back and front. Fold the seam allowance to the wrong side, insert elastic (approximate length indicated on the back pattern piece) between it and the main fabric, and topstitch with a zigzag stitch, stretching the elastic to the length of the upper edge.
  5. Cut a trim strip from the main fabric, 4 cm wide and the length indicated on the back piece. Press the longitudinal and transverse seam allowances to the wrong side, place on the right side of the garment according to the markings, and topstitch along the longitudinal sides, leaving the short sides unstitched. Thread a satin ribbon through the trim strip.
  6. Finish the bottom edge with a narrow rolled hem.
  7. Sew on the straps according to the sketch.
