Tech. Description

Sleeveless Collared Button-Front Blouse with Pleats

A women's sleeveless A-line blouse in sheer fabric with a stand collar, a cut-on button placket with seven buttons and three pressed pleats running the full length on each side of the placket.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own, or in cooler weather under a jacket or cardigan.
  • Over a camisole or slip, since the recommended fabrics are sheer.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, widening from the bust to the hem.

Length: Hip length, hem turned up twice and topstitched.

Collar: Stand collar with rounded front ends; outer stand interfaced, inner stand stitched in the ditch of the attaching seam.

Front: Pressed pleats on each front, the pleat depth facing the front edge and the folds facing the side seam.

Closure: Seven buttons on an interfaced cut-on placket, pressed twice to the wrong side and topstitched 0.1 cm from the inner fold; buttonholes on the right front.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with a 4.5–5.0 cm bias strip, folded in half, turned to the wrong side and topstitched 0.1 cm from the fold.

Back: One piece with no seams or darts.

Finishing: Shoulder and side seams pressed towards the back and overlocked.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Only three pattern pieces; the care goes into pressing accurate pleats, setting the stand collar and binding the armholes on fine fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine sheer fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front plackets, outer stand)
  • 7 buttons

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 2 pieces
  • Stand Collar – 2 pieces
  • Bias strips for the armholes, 4.5–5.0 cm wide – 2 pieces (cut by measurement)
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • Cut-on placket strips of the Front – 2 pieces
  • Stand Collar (outer) – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the cut-on plackets of the fronts and to the outer Stand Collar.
  2. Place the Stand Collar pieces right sides together and stitch along the outer edge, starting and ending the seam exactly at the stand attachment line. Clip the seam allowances on the curves, turn the stand right side out and press.
  3. Fold and press the pleats on the front according to the markings. Note: the pleat depths face the front edge and the folds face the side seam. Press the cut-on placket twice to the wrong side and topstitch 0.1 cm from the inner fold.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams of the blouse. Press the seams towards the back and overlock.
  5. Stitch the outer Stand Collar to the neckline, turn under the open edge of the inner Stand Collar and stitch it in place along the attachment seam.
  6. Cut bias strips from the main fabric, 4.5–5.0 cm wide and as long as the armhole. Press each strip in half lengthwise, right side out, place it on the right side of the armhole and stitch. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch it to the blouse 0.1 cm from the fold.
  7. Stitch the side seams of the blouse. Press the seams towards the back and overlock.
  8. Press the hem of the blouse to the wrong side, turn under and topstitch.
  9. Work buttonholes on the right front and sew buttons on the left front.
