Tech. Description

Pleated Bubble Skirt

A women's lined skirt with diagonal pleats stitched down from the waist and a bubble hem: the gathered skirt hem is sewn to the shorter lining hem. Faced waist, invisible zipper in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • For dinners, parties and theatre, with a fitted top or blouse tucked in.
  • For the office with a fine knit or a short jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Rounded bubble shape, held in at the hem by the lining.

Length: Knee length.

Waist: No waistband; the top edge is finished with an interfaced facing joined to the lining, understitched 0.2 cm from the seam.

Skirt: Front and back are cut as two identical, non-mirrored pieces, so the diagonal pleats run in one direction around the body. The pleats are stitched along marked lines and pressed from left to right.

Closure: Invisible zipper in the left side seam.

Finishing: The hem is gathered to the length of the lining hem and stitched to it, which forms the bubble; the skirt is turned through an opening in the right lining side seam.

Lining: Full lining, attached to the facing at the top and to the skirt at the hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Marking and stitching diagonal pleats, an invisible zipper, even gathering and bagging out the skirt and lining at both edges.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Lining fabric
  • Fusible interfacing (facings)
  • Invisible zipper

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Skirt - 2 pieces
    2. Facing - 2 pieces
  • From lining fabric:
    1. Lining - 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    1. Facing – 2 pieces

Attention! Skirt pieces are cut without symmetry. Either 2 right pieces or 2 left pieces, depending on the direction of the pleats. 2 symmetrical pieces are not allowed!

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the skirt facings with fusible interfacing.
  2. Stitch the right side seam. Overlock the seam and press towards the back.
  3. Mark the pleats on the skirt and stitch along the marked line. From the wrong side, press the pleats from left to right.
  4. Stitch the left side seam from the fastener mark downwards. Press the seam open, pressing the seam allowance for the fastener, and overlock. Place the zipper under the fastener seam allowances and stitch so that the teeth are not visible.
  5. Stitch the facing to the lining. Overlock the seam and press. Stitch the side seams of the lining, leaving an opening for turning 15-20 cm long in the right side seam. Stitch the left side seam from the fastener mark downwards. Press the seams open and overlock.
  6. Place the skirt and lining right sides together and stitch along the upper edge. Trim any excess pleats extending beyond the seam line. Topstitch the stitching seam onto the facing 0.2 cm from the stitching seam. Fold the lining to the wrong side and press.
  7. Along the bottom edge of the skirt, make a stitch with loosely tensioned stitches. Gather the edge to the length of the LINING's bottom edge, distributing the gathers evenly. Through the opening in the right side seam, turn the skirt to the wrong side and stitch the bottom edges of the skirt and lining. Press the seam and overlock. Turn the skirt to the right side.
  8. Sew the lining to the zipper. Stitch the opening in the seam closed.
