Tech. Description

Ruffle Collar Blouse with Puff Sleeves

A women's semi-fitted blouse in fine fabric with a gathered neckline set into a high stand collar covered by two layers of gathered frill, short puff sleeves made over a sleeve lining, and a short back neck opening closed with hooks and eyes.

When To Wear

  • Office and daytime wear with high-waisted trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • Dinners and events in spring and summer; under a sleeveless jacket or cardigan in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, shaped with vertical darts on the front and back.

Length: Hip length, hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Collar: High interfaced stand collar cut in one piece and folded in half. Two flounces with rolled-hem edges and no seam allowance are laid one on top of the other, gathered together along one line to the length of the collar and topstitched to its outer side. The front and back neckline is gathered into the collar.

Closure: Short opening at the top of the centre back seam; two hooks and eyes are caught into the ends of the collar.

Sleeves: Short puff sleeves of two layers: the outer sleeve is gathered at the lower edge onto a sleeve lining, stitched to it along the hem and turned through, so the lining holds the puff. The cap is gathered between the notches and set into the armhole, then topstitched 0.1 cm from the seam on the body side.

Back: Centre back seam, pressed open, with darts on each side.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering two flounces and the neckline to the collar length, rolled-hem edges, and lined puff sleeves in fine fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (stand collar)
  • 2 hooks and 2 eyes

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: hem of the Sleeve – 4 cm; all edges of the Upper Flounce and Lower Flounce – 0 cm; all other seams 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (don't forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Sleeve Lining – 2 pieces
    • Stand Collar – 1 piece
    • Lower Flounce – 1 piece
    • Upper Flounce – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Stand Collar – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Stand Collar.
  2. Stitch the darts on the Back and Front pieces. Press the darts towards the center.
  3. Stitch the center back seam from the opening mark downwards. Press seams open and serge.
  4. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the blouse. Serge the side and shoulder seams. Press the side and shoulder seams towards the back.
  5. Collar: Fold the Stand Collar in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the short ends, catching the hooks and eyes in the seam. Turn the collar right side out and press. Finish all edges of the Upper Flounce and Lower Flounce with a rolled hem on the serger. Place the Upper Flounce on the Lower Flounce along the marked line and sew a gathering stitch (loosened upper thread) along this line. Gather to the length of the collar. Mark the flounce attachment line on the collar (transfer from the pattern). Topstitch the flounces onto the outer side of the collar. Sew a gathering stitch along the neckline edge of the Back and Front and gather. Attach the collar to the neckline, aligning the notches. Press the seam.
  6. Stitch the underarm seams of the Sleeve and the Sleeve Lining. Serge and press. Sew a gathering stitch along the lower edge of the Sleeve and gather. Place the Sleeve Lining inside the Sleeve, right sides together, and stitch the pieces along the bottom edge. Serge and press the seam towards the lining. Turn right side out, align the two layers at the sleeve cap and baste together. From now on treat the sleeve as one layer. Sew a gathering stitch on the sleeve cap between the notches (on the front side – up to the upper notch) and gather. Set the sleeves into the armholes. Serge and press the seam towards the back and front. Topstitch along the armhole 0.1 cm from the seam.
  7. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, fold, and topstitch.
