Tech. Description

Belted Lined Cape with Stand Collar and Button Front

A hip-length women's cape with a stand collar, a five-button front and wide rounded side panels falling over the arms. Two bound slits at the front waist let a belt pass through, so the front is held in at the waist while the side panels hang free. Fully lined.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and spring over blouses, fine knitwear and dresses.
  • With slim trousers, jeans or straight skirts, belted at the waist.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Wide, rounded cape shape: a back and two fronts joined to large side panels (labelled Sleeve) by vertical seams.

Length: Hip length, with a curved hem.

Collar: Stand collar, stitched along three sides and topstitched along the edge.

Front: Single-breasted with five buttons, buttonholes on the right front; separate front facings, front edges topstitched.

Waist: Two slits on the fronts at waist level, finished like welt-pocket openings with interfaced 4 × 9 cm facings and stitched through the cape and lining; a belt is threaded through them.

Back: One piece with no centre back seam, joined to the side panels by vertical seams.

Lining: Full lining sewn to the facings, then stitched to the cape in one pass along the front edges, neckline and hem, and turned through an opening in the right front panel seam of the lining.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A bagged lining sewn around the whole edge, a stand collar set between cape and facings, and welt-style slits cut through all layers of the finished cape.

Fabric Recommendations

Suiting fabrics of natural or blended fibres, for example tweed.

    3. Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    1. Stand Collar – 1 piece
    2. Center Front Facing – 2 pieces
    3. Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece

Attention: The back and front pieces from the lining fabric are cut without the width of the Back Neckline Facing and the Center Front Facing, respectively.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Center Front Facing pieces, the Back Neckline Facing and the upper Stand Collar.
  2. Place the Stand Collar pieces right sides together and stitch along three sides. Trim the seam allowances at the corners, turn the collar right side out and press.
  3. Stitch the shoulder seams. Press seam allowances open.
  4. Stitch the Sleeve (side panel) pieces to the back and fronts. Press the seam allowances towards the sleeve.
  5. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Center Front Facings and the Back Neckline Facing. Press the seam allowances open. Sew the lining pieces together, leaving an opening in the right front sleeve seam for turning. Stitch the lining to the front facings and the back neckline facing. Place the facings with the lining on the cape, right sides together, insert the finished stand collar between them, and stitch all around the front edges, neckline and hem. Clip seam allowances at curves, trim corners, turn the cape right side out, baste, and press. Stitch the turning opening closed. Topstitch along the front edges and the stand collar.
  6. Cut two rectangles 4x9 cm from the main fabric. Fuse them with interfacing and overlock all around. Place them right side down onto the markings for the slits and stitch along the markings (the cape is already fully finished with lining and is stitched through all layers). Cut the fabric between the stitching lines as for a welt pocket. Make diagonal cuts 1-1.5 cm from the short sides. Turn the rectangle facing to the wrong side through the opening and straighten the edges. Topstitch around the edge of the opening to secure it.
  7. Make buttonholes on the right front and sew the buttons on the left front.
