A cropped women's top for low-stretch knit or stretch woven fabric, with a crossover front forming a deep V-neck, cap sleeves cut in one with the bodice, and a back shaped by a centre seam and darts. Recommended fabric: low-stretch knit fabrics, or woven fabrics with added elastane.

Tech. Description

Cropped Wrap Front Top

A cropped women's top for low-stretch knit or stretch woven fabric, with a crossover front forming a deep V-neck, cap sleeves cut in one with the bodice, and a back shaped by a centre seam and darts. The front pieces are stitched together where they cross, so the top pulls on without a fastening.

When To Wear

  • In summer with high-waisted skirts, trousers or shorts.
  • Over a slip dress or under an open shirt or jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, shaped by darts on the back and on each front.

Length: Cropped, ending above the waist.

Neckline: Deep V at the front formed by the crossed fronts; wide rounded neckline at the back. Edges overlocked, turned under and topstitched.

Sleeves: Cap sleeves cut in one with the fronts and back; armhole edges turned under and topstitched.

Front: Asymmetric right and left fronts crossing at the front waist, each with a dart; the right front hem is finished before the pieces are joined, then the fronts are stitched together where they cross.

Back: Centre back seam and two vertical darts.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, allowances overlocked and trimmed to 0.6–0.8 cm; hems topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pattern pieces, darts and turned-and-topstitched edges; the only care point is joining the crossed fronts accurately.

Fabric Recommendations

Low-stretch knit fabrics, or woven fabrics with added elastane.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle for the hems

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Right Front – 1 piece
  • Left Front – 1 piece

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are sewn with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.
