Tech. Description

Tie Front Blouse with Flared Sleeves

A women's blouse for sheer fabrics with a self-lined bodice, a deep V-neck and ties cut in one with the fronts that knot at a raised waist seam. Below the seam a flared lower part falls open at the front into pointed ends; wide flared sleeves.

When To Wear

  • In summer over a camisole or slip top, with slim trousers, jeans or a pencil skirt.
  • For evenings out and holidays in warm weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice with darts, flaring from the raised waist seam.

Length: Hip length; the front edges of the lower part drop into points below the hem line at the back.

Neckline: Deep V at the front, round at the back, finished by bagging out the two bodice layers.

Front: Open front with no buttons: the bodice fronts extend into ties knotted under the bust. The lower front edges are overlocked, turned under and topstitched.

Sleeves: Set-in sleeves with an eased cap, widening into a bell below the elbow; seam pressed towards the back.

Back: Bodice with darts and no centre back seam, joined at the raised waist seam to a flared lower back in one piece.

Lining: The bodice is cut twice (outer and inner) and stitched together along the neckline, front edges, ties and waist seam, catching in the lower part, then turned through the armhole.

Finishing: No hem allowance: the blouse hem and sleeve hems are finished with a narrow rolled hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Handling chiffon, bagging out a double-layer bodice with ties and a set-in lower part, easing sleeves and sewing rolled hems.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight fabrics of natural or blended fibres, for example chiffon.

Additional Supplies

  • Overlocker with a rolled-hem setting for the hems

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Front – 4 pieces
  • Lower Back – 1 piece
  • Lower Front – 2 pieces
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front and Back pieces. Press the darts towards the center of the pieces.
  2. Stitch the side seams joining the Lower Front pieces to the Lower Back. Press the seams towards the back and overlock.
  3. Overlock the center front edges of the Lower Front pieces, press them to the wrong side and topstitch.
  4. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the outer bodice (one Back and two Front pieces). Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the inner bodice in the same way. Press the seams open and overlock.
  5. Place the outer and inner bodices right sides together, insert the assembled lower part between them along the bottom edge, and stitch all around the back neckline, front edges, ties and bottom edges. The lower part must lie against the outer bodice. Clip the curves, turn the blouse right side out through the armhole, and press.
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam and overlock it. Press the sleeve seam towards the back.
  7. Set in the sleeves, easing the cap. Overlock the seam.
  8. Finish the bottom of the garment and sleeves with a narrow rolled hem.
