Tech. Description

Gathered Neck Blouse with Knotted Ties

A sleeveless, hip-length women's blouse with a high neckline gathered on several rows of stitching into a small frill, a faced keyhole slit at the front and a bunch of eight narrow self-fabric ties with knotted ends.

When To Wear

  • Summer, with trousers, jeans or shorts.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan in spring and autumn.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, relaxed fit, shaped only by the side seams.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: High round neckline finished with a front and back facing, then gathered along the marked lines with several rows of loose stitches, so the edge stands up as a small frill.

Front: Keyhole slit at the centre front, faced and interfaced. Eight ties, each folded from a 4 cm strip and edgestitched 0.1 cm from the edge, are stitched into the unstitched sections at the top of the slit and tied at the neck.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with 4 cm bias binding folded in half, turned to the inside and topstitched.

Back: One piece, no centre back seam; the back neckline is gathered like the front.

Finishing: Hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A faced slit with a seam narrowing from 0.5 to 0.2 cm, evenly distributed gathering over several rows, narrow ties and bias-bound armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk, or fabrics with an added share of synthetic fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (slit area on the front and front facing)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Back Facing – 1 piece
  • Front Facing – 1 piece
  • Additionally: 8 ties, 4 cm wide and of the desired length; 2 bias strips 4 cm wide, each equal to the armhole length.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the shoulder seams of the blouse. Press the shoulder seams open and serge.
  2. Fuse fusible interfacing to the slit area on the Front and the Front Facing. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Front Facing and Back Facing. Press the shoulder seams open. Place the facing on the blouse, right sides together, and stitch around the neckline and along the slit, leaving the section at the marked level unstitched. The seam at the top of the slit is 0.5 cm wide, at the bottom 0.2 cm. Cut the slit open. Turn the facing to the wrong side and press, turning the seam allowances inwards on the unstitched section.
  3. Stitch the side seams of the blouse. Press the side seams towards the back and serge.
  4. Cut 8 ties of the desired length, 4 cm wide. Press the ties in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Unfold and press the long edges to the center crease. Fold the ties along the center line, matching the folds, and edgestitch 0.1 cm from the edge.
  5. Sew lines of long, loose stitches along the marked lines around the neckline. Pull them up to the required length and secure. Insert the ties into the unstitched sections of the front slit and secure them with machine stitching.
  6. Cut a bias strip 4 cm wide and equal to the armhole length. Press it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Place the binding right sides together with the armhole and stitch. Turn the binding to the wrong side. Topstitch the seam allowance to the binding 0.1 cm from the seam. Topstitch the fold of the binding to the armhole.
  7. Serge the hem allowance, turn to the wrong side, and topstitch.
