Gathered Bodice Sleeveless High-Low Dress

When To Wear

  • Summer days and warm evenings, with sandals or flat shoes.
  • Daytime celebrations and holidays.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose, falling from the gathered front neckline and widening towards the hem; no waist seam.

Length: High-low hem: around the knee at the front, curving down to a longer back.

Back: Centre back seam with a concealed zip in the upper part; the facing edges are stitched to the zip tape.

Waist: A separate belt, cut 9 cm wide, folded, turned out and edgestitched 0.1 cm from the edge, then secured to the dress under the bust. It can be placed at the waist or hips instead.

Finishing: Hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Only four pattern pieces, but a concealed zip and an all-in-one neck and armhole facing stitched in two stages and attached to the zip.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Concealed zip for the centre back

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Back Facing – 2 pieces
  • Front Facing – 1 piece
  • Also cut a decorative belt 9 cm wide (including seam allowances) in the desired length.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Overlock the center back edges of the back. Stitch the center back seam from the notch downwards. Press the seam open, pressing the seam allowance for the closure.
  2. Place the zipper under the seam allowances so that the teeth are not visible and stitch it in place.
  3. Along the neckline edge of the front, stitch with loosely tensioned stitches. Gather the neckline to the desired length.
  4. Stitch and overlock the side and shoulder seams of the dress. Press the shoulder and side seams towards the back.
  5. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the Front Facing and Back Facings, press the seams open. Overlock the outer edge of the facings. Place the facing pieces right sides together with the garment and stitch the neckline edge of the front and back. Stitch the armhole in two steps: first the upper armhole edge, then the lower armhole edge. Understitch the seam allowances to the facing 0.2 cm from the seam. Turn the facing to the wrong side and press. Stitch the center edge of the facing to the zipper seam allowance.
  6. Press the hem allowance of the dress to the wrong side, fold under and topstitch.
  7. Take the decorative belt strip (9 cm wide). Fold the belt lengthwise in half, right sides together, and stitch along the long and short sides. Turn the belt right side out, baste, and press. Fold the raw seam allowances inwards and topstitch the belt 0.1 cm from the edge. Secure the belt to the dress under the bust.
  8. Tip: Depending on the body type, the belt can be placed at the waist or hips.
