Tech. Description

Diagonal Paneled Skirt

A women's knee-length skirt, slightly flared, built from curved panels that sweep diagonally across the front and back. Every panel seam is topstitched; the waist is finished with a facing and closes with an invisible zip in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • For the office with a blouse or a fitted knit top.
  • In spring and autumn with tights and boots.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the waist and hips, widening slightly to the hem.

Length: To the knee.

Skirt: Front and back are each assembled from four pieces: an upper skirt, a middle skirt, a side skirt and an insert. The curved seams run from the waist and side diagonally down towards the hem; each seam is overlocked, pressed to one side and topstitched.

Waist: No waistband. The top edge is finished with interfaced front and back facings, understitched 0.2 cm from the seam.

Closure: Invisible zip in the left side seam.

Finishing: Right side seam pressed towards the back; hem turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Long curved seams that must be matched at the notches, even topstitching along curves, an invisible zip and a faced waist.

Fabric Recommendations

Firm, dense fabrics from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (waist facings)
  • Invisible zip

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Upper skirt - 2 pieces
    2. Middle skirt - 2 pieces
    3. Side skirt - 2 pieces
    4. Insert - 2 pieces
    5. Facing - 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing: facing.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse fusible interfacing to the skirt facings.
  2. Assemble the front: stitch the insert to the side skirt. Overlock the seam, press towards the side, and topstitch.
  3. Stitch the upper and middle skirt parts together. Overlock the seam, press towards the upper, and topstitch.
  4. Stitch the middle and side skirt parts together. Overlock the seam, press towards the middle, and topstitch.
  5. Assemble the back similarly to the front.
  6. Overlock the left side edge. Stitch the left side edge from the zipper mark downwards. Press the seam open, pressing the seam allowance for the zipper. Place the zipper under the seam allowances and stitch so that the teeth are not visible.
  7. Stitch and overlock the right side seam of the skirt. Press the seam towards the back.
  8. Stitch and press open the side edges of the facings. Overlock the lower edge. Place the facings with the upper edge of the skirt right sides together and stitch. Topstitch the facing seam onto the facings at a distance of 0.2 cm from the stitching line. Fold the facings to the wrong side and press.
  9. Press the hem seam allowance of the skirt to the wrong side, fold, and topstitch.
