Tech. Description

Off-Shoulder Ruched Front Blouse

A fitted women's top in stretch knit with raglan sleeves, a wide neckline framed by a gathered drape band, and a centre front seam ruched by a decorative ribbon drawstring that ties near the hem. The front ends in an asymmetric, pointed hem.

When To Wear

  • For evenings out and parties with slim trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • In spring and autumn; the wide neckline leaves the collarbones open.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting through the body; the front is longer than the back.

Neckline: Wide neckline, turned to the wrong side and topstitched. A gathered band (placket) lies over the neckline: it is set into the centre front seam and the left front raglan seam 1.2 cm below the neck edge, and tacked to the raglan seams of back and front.

Sleeves: Raglan sleeves; the sleeve and side seams are stitched in one.

Front: Cut as right and left fronts joined by a centre seam. From a notch down to the hem the seam allowances are topstitched to form channels; a ribbon threaded through them gathers the front into ruching and is tied.

Back: One piece with a straight hem.

Finishing: Body and sleeve hems are finished with a narrow overlock edge stitch, without turning up.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering a band and setting it into seams at exact distances, raglan sleeves, a drawstring channel in the centre front seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium to high stretch, from natural or blended fibres. Seams are sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative ribbon for the drawstring

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back – 1 piece
  • 2. Right Front – 1 piece
  • 3. Left Front – 1 piece
  • 4. Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • 5. Placket – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Serge the longitudinal edges of the placket, fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch. Connect the marks on the placket with straight lines. Stitch along these lines, as well as along the short edges, with loosely tensioned stitches and gather.
  2. On the front pieces, clip the seam allowance near the marks on the center edge. Serge the section of the edge between the clips, fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch close to the edge of the allowance.
  3. Place the front pieces right sides together, insert the placket between them. Note: The placket piece is positioned 1.2 cm from the neckline edge and 1 cm from the attached allowances. Stitch the section of the center front seam from the neckline to the clip. Serge the seam and press. Serge the section of the seam from the clip to the hemline, press, and topstitch.
  4. Attach the sleeves to the back. Serge the seams and press them towards the back.
  5. Place the sleeves and front right sides together. On the left side, insert the placket between them. Note: The placket piece is positioned 1.2 cm from the neckline edge and 3-4 cm from the lower edge of the armhole. Attach the sleeves to the front. Serge the seams and press.
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam and side seam in one continuous seam. Serge the seams and press them open/towards the back.
  7. Serge the neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  8. Serge the bottom edge of the garment and the sleeve hems with a narrow edge stitch.
  9. Thread the drawstring as shown in the diagram and pull to gather.
  10. Attach the placket to the raglan seams of the back and front with a 1 cm stitch.
