Tech. Description

Cold-Shoulder Knit Top

A semi-fitted, hip-length women's top for stretch knit fabric, with an asymmetric cold-shoulder opening on the left shoulder held by two crossed bound straps, and front and back each made of two parts joined by a diagonal seam.

When To Wear

  • Spring and early autumn, with jeans, trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • Casual daytime outings and evenings out.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, following the body to the hip.

Length: Hip length, straight hem turned up 1.5 cm and topstitched.

Neckline: Round neckline bound with knit tape or bias binding; the binding continues along the straps.

Front: Right and left fronts joined by a diagonal seam running from the left shoulder down to the right side of the hem.

Back: Right and left backs joined by a matching diagonal seam.

Sleeves: Set-in sleeves ending below the elbow. The right sleeve is a standard set-in sleeve; the left sleeve has its upper edge turned under and topstitched, leaving the shoulder bare.

Finishing: The straps are cut in one with the front and back parts and joined crosswise over the left shoulder: right front to left back, right back to left front. Strap edges have no seam allowance and are bound, starting from the left armhole.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Asymmetric right and left pieces, crossed straps joined at the shoulder, continuous binding on stretch fabric and a partly open sleeve head.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium or high-stretch knit fabric of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit tape or bias binding for the neckline and strap edges

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • Right Back – 1 piece
  • Left Back – 1 piece
  • Right Front – 1 piece
  • Left Front – 1 piece
  • Right Sleeve – 1 piece
  • Left Sleeve – 1 piece

Tip: Sew knit pieces with a stretch stitch or a narrow zigzag. When overlocking, trim the seam allowances to 0.6–0.8 cm. Topstitch the hem allowances with a twin needle to keep them stretchy.
