Tech. Description

Fitted Long Sleeve Twisted Front Top

A women's fitted knit top with long set-in sleeves and a two-part front: the upper bust piece is twisted once at the centre and joined to the lower front, and double-layer plackets run from the side seam to the shoulder on each side.

When To Wear

  • With jeans, trousers or skirts for everyday wear in autumn and spring.
  • Under an open jacket or blazer, where the twisted front stays visible.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the body, hip length.

Neckline: Wide and open at the front, framed by the plackets; the upper edge of the bust piece is turned under and topstitched. The back neckline is wide and shallow, turned under and topstitched.

Sleeves: Long, set-in, with turned-up hems.

Front: Upper front twisted one turn and stitched to the lower front below the bust. Two plackets, each cut double, enclose the edges of the upper front from the side seam to the shoulder.

Back: One piece; the back shoulder is 1 cm longer than the front to allow for the neckline finish.

Finishing: Hem, sleeve hems and back neckline turned to the wrong side and topstitched, with a twin needle on the hems to keep the stretch.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Clipping at notches, enclosing the upper front between paired plackets, and twisting the bust piece evenly before joining it to the lower front.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium to high stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutting Plan

From main fabric:

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Lower Front – 1 piece
  • Upper Front – 1 piece
  • Front Placket – 4 pieces
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Clip the seam allowance near the notches on the lower edge of the upper front piece. Serge the upper edge and the edge between the notches on the upper front piece. Fold the allowances to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  2. Place the front plackets right sides together, inserting the upper front piece between them. Stitch the plackets to the upper front piece. The seam runs from the side edge to the shoulder edge. Fold the plackets to the right side and press. Then treat the plackets as single-layer pieces.
  3. Clip the allowance between the notches on the upper edge of the lower front piece. Serge the edge, fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  4. Twist the upper front piece 1 time and stitch it to the lower front piece. Serge the seam and press.
  5. Stitch the shoulder seams. Note: The back shoulder seam is 1 cm longer than the front shoulder seam (allowance for finishing the back neckline). Press the seam towards the back.
  6. Stitch the side seams. Serge the seams and press.
  7. Stitch the sleeve seams. Serge the seams and press.
  8. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches. Serge the seams and press.
  9. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, the sleeve hems, and the back neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
