Tech. Description

Camisole with Ruched Ring Detail

A women's close-fitting knit camisole with thin straps, a shaped front neckline gathered through a decorative ring at the centre front, and a straight-cut back upper edge. Cut from just two pieces, front and back.

When To Wear

  • On its own in summer, with skirts, shorts or trousers.
  • Under an open jacket or cardigan in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, hip length.

Neckline: Two curved upper edges meeting at the centre front, folded to the wrong side and topstitched. Below them an oval opening is finished with a facing; the ring is inserted between the front and the facing and holds the fabric in soft gathers.

Back: One piece with a straight upper edge, turned under and topstitched. The back side seam is 1.5 cm longer than the front one.

Finishing: The knit tape that binds the front armholes continues as the straps; their ends are sewn to the upper edge of the back after the length is adjusted at fitting. Hem turned up and topstitched, with a twin needle to keep the stretch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two pattern pieces and straight seams; the only careful steps are the faced oval opening with the ring and binding the armholes with tape that forms the straps.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium to high stretch, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative ring for the centre front
  • Knit binding tape (or bias binding) for the armholes and straps

Cutting Plan

From main fabric:

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece

Tip: When sewing pattern pieces made from knit fabrics, use a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. Topstitch the hem allowance with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Serge the upper edges of the front, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  2. Cut a facing for the oval edge of the front, depending on the ring width. Facing calculation: ring thickness + 0.5 cm for ease + 2 cm for seams = facing width.
  3. Serge the outer and side edges of the facing. Fold the side edges of the facing to the wrong side by 0.7 cm. Place the facing on the front, right sides together, and stitch along the inner edge. Fold the facing to the wrong side, insert the ring between the front and the facing, and topstitch.
  4. Bind the armhole edge of the front with knit tape, leaving the ends of the tape for the straps.
  5. Serge the upper edge of the back.
  6. Stitch the side seams of the back and front. Note: the length of the back side seam is 1.5 cm longer than the front side seam. Align the edges from the hemline. Serge the seams and press towards the back.
  7. Fold the allowance of the upper edge of the back to the wrong side and topstitch.
  8. Serge the bottom edge of the garment. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  9. Adjust the strap length during fitting. Sew the strap ends to the upper edge of the back.
