Tech. Description

Cotton Stretch Jersey Top with Notched V-Neck

A women's close-fitting hip-length top for knit fabric, with a round neckline split by a short V-shaped notch at the centre front, set-in sleeves shown in three lengths and twin-needle hems. The photos show one sleeve length. The pattern has one full-length sleeve; for a short or three-quarter sleeve, shorten it to the length you want.

When To Wear

  • Short sleeves in summer, with skirts, shorts or trousers.
  • Three-quarter and long sleeves in spring and autumn, on their own or under a cardigan or jacket.
  • Everyday and casual office wear.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body, following the figure through the side seams.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Neckline: Round neckline with a narrow V-shaped slit cut into the centre front. The V is bound with bias binding; the rest of the neckline edge is overlocked, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: One-piece set-in sleeves, shown short, three-quarter and long.

Front: One piece, no seams or darts.

Back: One piece.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, overlocked and trimmed to 0.6–0.8 cm; shoulder and side seams pressed towards the back. Hem and sleeve hems turned to the wrong side and topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pieces, set-in sleeves matched at the notches and twin-needle hems. The bound V-slit at the front is the one detail that needs care.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium to high stretch, made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding for the front V-neck
  • Twin needle for topstitching the hems

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back – 1 piece
  • 2. Front – 1 piece
  • 3. Sleeve – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

Tip: When sewing knit fabrics, use a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. Stitch the hem allowance with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

  1. Stitch shoulder and side seams of the back and front. Finish seams and press towards the back.
  2. Stitch sleeve seams. Finish seams and press.
  3. Set sleeves into armholes, matching notches. Finish seams and press.
  4. Finish the V-neckline of the front with bias binding.
  5. Finish the bottom edge of the garment, the bottom edge of the sleeve, and the neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and stitch.
