Tech. Description

Short Frilled Dress

A sleeveless women's wrap dress without a waist seam, shaped by bust and waist darts. A flounce runs along the V-neckline and the wrap edge and stands over the shoulders; diagonal flounces at the lower edge form an asymmetric, pointed hem, and the dress fastens with narrow ties.

When To Wear

  • Summer days and holidays, with sandals or flat shoes.
  • Garden parties and summer evening events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bodice, without a waist seam; bust darts pressed downwards and waist darts pressed towards the centre front.

Length: Short at the sides, dropping to long points at the front and back through the lower flounces.

Neckline: Deep wrap V-neckline. The front flounce is stitched to the front neckline edge wrong sides together, the seam overlocked and topstitched onto the front 0.4 cm from the seam; its outer edge is finished with a rolled hem. The back neckline is bound with bias binding.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with bias-bound armholes; the neckline flounce stands over the shoulders.

Closure: Wrap front, cut as right and left fronts with different lower flounces. Narrow ties are stitched to both fronts; one passes through an opening left in the right side seam and the ties are knotted at the waist.

Back: Centre back seam; the lower back flounce is stitched to a V-shaped seam at the back.

Skirt: Diagonal flounces on the fronts and back, seams overlocked and pressed towards the flounces.

Finishing: Flounce hems and tie edges finished with a narrow rolled overlock hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Joining flounces to curved and diagonal seams without stretching them, rolled-hem finishing, bias binding on curved edges and a wrap front with ties through the side seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Mark and stitch the bust darts on the front. Press the bust darts downwards. Mark and stitch the waist darts on the front. Press the darts towards the center front.
  2. Overlock the side edges of the front and back.
  3. Stitch together the two Waistband pieces that form the long tie and overlock. Stitch, overlock, and press the center back seam. Without stretching the edges, finish with a rolled overlock hem: the lower edges of all flounces, the upper and lower edges of Waistband 1 and 2, and the upper (outer) edge of the Front Flounce. Stitch the Lower Back Flounce to the back. Overlock the seam and press it towards the flounce.
  4. Fold and press the bias binding in half lengthwise. Bind the front and back armhole edges, the front neckline edge up to the notch, and the back neckline edge.
  5. Place the Front Flounce on the front, wrong sides together, and stitch along the front neckline edge. Overlock the seam and topstitch it onto the front 0.4 cm from the seam.
  6. Stitch Lower Front Flounce 2 to the right front. Stitch the Waistband (tie) to the right front. Overlock the flounce seam and press it towards the flounce. Stitch Lower Front Flounce 1 to the left front. Stitch the Waistband (tie) to the left front. Overlock the flounce seam and press it towards the flounce.
  7. Stitch the side seams of the dress, leaving an opening for the tie in the right side seam. Stitch and overlock the shoulder seams of the dress.
