Tech. Description

Halter Neck Lace Flounce Crop Top

A women's halter-neck crop top with triangular darted cups and a wide lace flounce below the bust. The cups are lined with satin, and the armholes and back edge are bound with bias binding.

When To Wear

  • In hot weather and on holiday, with high-waisted skirts, trousers or shorts.
  • For summer evening events, worn with a matching skirt.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the bust, with a flounce falling loosely below.

Length: Cropped, the flounce ending at about the waist.

Neckline: Deep V between the cups; halter straps tie at the back of the neck.

Front: Two triangular cups with bust darts, made of lace over the main fabric and faced with lining along the front edges. A lace piece over the cups is joined to the flounce with a blind stitch.

Back: Open back. The flounce is cut in two pieces and opens at the centre back.

Finishing: Bias binding cut 5 cm wide, folded in half and sewn to the armholes and back edge so that 0.75 cm shows on the garment, then turned inside and topstitched.

Lining: The cups are lined with satin lining; the lace and main fabric are basted together and handled as one layer.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Working with lace and guipure, layering lace over a base fabric, lined darted cups, narrow bias-bound edges.

Fabric Recommendations

Lace or guipure, with silk fabric for the cups. With sheer fabric, do not transfer markings with carbon paper, as the lines show through on the right side.

Additional Supplies

  • Satin lining

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Cups – 2 pieces
    2. Lace cups – 1 piece
    3. Flounce – 2 pieces
  • From lining fabric:
    1. Cups – 2 pieces

Cut bias binding on the bias, 5.0 cm wide.

Recommendations for working with sheer fabrics. Do not transfer pattern contours and markings to cut pieces using carbon paper, as all lines will be visible from the right side of the garment. It is easiest to cut all pieces with identical seam allowances and stitch seams to the same width.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch bust darts on the cups.
  2. Stitch bust darts on the lining cups.
  3. Stitch main fabric cups.
  4. Stitch lining cups.
  5. Face the lower edge of the cups with the lining cups.
  6. Attach the lace cups to the flounce with a blind stitch.
  7. Place the main fabric cut pieces under the lace cut pieces, baste, and then treat the pieces as single-layer.
  8. Face the front edges of the cups with lace with the lining cups, turn the cups right side out.
  9. Fold the trim strip for the armhole and back neckline in half lengthwise and press. Attach the folded trim strip to the armhole edges, with the fold of the trim strip lying on the garment at a width of 0.75 cm. Trim seam allowances to 0.5 cm width. Turn the trim strip to the wrong side, topstitch along the armhole and back neckline.
