Tech. Description

Loose Fit Tunic with Side Slits

A women's loose tunic with bust darts, a round neckline, long set-in sleeves that widen towards the wrist and side slits at the hem. A keyhole opening at the centre back neck closes with one button and a thread loop.

When To Wear

  • In summer, over a camisole or slip, since the recommended fabrics are sheer.
  • Over slim trousers or leggings; the side slits leave room to move.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose and straight, with bust darts from the side seams.

Length: Below the hip, with a slightly curved hem.

Neckline: Round neckline finished with a folded bias strip, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves, flared towards the hem and eased into the armhole; hem turned up and topstitched.

Front: One piece, no opening.

Back: One piece with a keyhole slit at the centre back neck, finished with a folded bias strip; one button and a thread loop at the top.

Finishing: Side seams stitched down to the slits; slits and hem topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Few pieces and straight seams; the care needed is in handling sheer fabric and applying narrow folded bias strips to the neckline and keyhole.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine organza or embroidered chiffon.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Front – 1 piece
    2. Back – 1 piece
    3. Sleeve – 2 pieces
    4. Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    5. Slit Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the bust darts on the front.
  2. Stitch the shoulder seams.
  3. Stitch the side seams down to the slits.
  4. Stitch the sleeve seams.
  5. Set in the sleeves, easing the cap.
  6. Fold the Slit Facing (for the back slit) and the Neckline Facing (for the front and back neckline) in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Stitch the folded facings to the raw edges of the back slit and of the front and back neckline, so that the fold of each facing lies 0.75 cm onto the garment. Trim the seam allowances to 0.5 cm. Turn the facings to the wrong side and topstitch the tunic along the back slit and the front and back neckline.
  7. Topstitch the side slits.
  8. Turn up and topstitch the hems of the sleeves and the tunic.
  9. Sew on the button and a thread loop.
