Tech. Description

Pull-On Pants with Hem Slits

Women's straight-leg pull-on trousers in knit fabric, with an elasticated waistband, front pockets with a separate side part and deep cuffs sewn on at the hem, slit at the outer side seam.

When To Wear

  • At home, for travel and for walks in the cooler months, in a brushed or terry-backed knit.
  • With a sweatshirt, long-sleeved T-shirt or knit cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, relaxed leg with no darts or pleats.

Length: Ankle length, ending in a deep cuff.

Waist: Separate waistband sewn into a ring and attached to the trousers, with 3 cm elastic inserted through an opening; no zip or fly.

Pockets: Curved front pocket openings with a separate side part forming the back of the pocket. The opening edge is interfaced and topstitched.

Back: Centre back seam, no pockets.

Legs: Cuffs cut as front and back fold-over parts, folded in half and stitched to the lower edge of the leg. The cuff side seam is left open below a mark, forming a slit at the outer side.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a narrow zigzag or stretch stitch so they keep their stretch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. No zip or fly; the details are cut-away pockets with a side part, an elastic waistband and folded cuffs with slits, sewn with stretch stitches.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with a brushed or terry (looped) reverse side: jersey, knit-backed velvet.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (pocket opening edges)
  • Elastic, 3 cm wide, for the waistband

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    • Front Half – 2 pieces
    • Back Half – 2 pieces
    • Side Part – 2 pieces
    • Pocket Bag – 2 pieces
    • Front Fold Over Part – 2 pieces
    • Back Fold Over Part – 2 pieces
    • Waistband – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Strips to reinforce the pocket opening edges

Tip: To ensure the fabric remains stretchy in the areas of finished seams, stitch the cut pieces with a narrow zigzag or special stretch stitch. These recommendations do not apply to industrial production.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Pockets with a separate side part. Fuse interfacing to the pocket opening edge of the Front Half. Stitch the Pocket Bag to the Front Half and turn it to the wrong side. Topstitch the pocket opening. Place the Front Half onto the Side Part along the matching line and stitch the Pocket Bag to the Side Part.
  2. Assembling the trousers. Stitch the side seams. Stitch the center front and center back seams. Stitch the inseams. Stitch the Front Fold Over Part to the Back Fold Over Part along the inseam, and along the side seam up to the slit mark. Fold the cuff in half and stitch the slit edges up to the mark. Clip the seam allowance. Stitch the cuff to the bottom of the trouser leg.
  3. Waistband. Stitch the waistband into a loop, leaving an opening for the elastic. Attach the waistband to the trousers. Insert elastic tape into the waistband and secure it.
  4. Press the finished trousers.
