Tech. Description

Hooded Full-Zip Jacket

A women's hip-length jacket in knit fabric with a three-piece hood on an elastic drawcord, a separating front zipper and slanted welt pockets set into the seam between the front and the side panel. Unlined, with front and neck facings.

When To Wear

  • As a warm top layer at home, for walks and for sport in spring and autumn.
  • With jeans, joggers or leggings, over a T-shirt or thin knit.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Relaxed, straight body.

Length: To the hip.

Collar: Hood made of two side pieces and a centre panel. The front edge is turned and topstitched to form a channel for an elastic cord, which exits through two buttonholes and ends in cord stoppers.

Front: Separating zipper at the centre front, set between the front edge and the facing; the facing also finishes the neckline and is stitched down at the shoulder seam.

Sleeves: One-piece set-in sleeves with a low shoulder line, hems topstitched.

Pockets: Pocket bags with an interfaced folded welt, placed on the side panels and caught in the seam joining the side panel to the front; the seam is topstitched.

Back: One piece, with side panels at the sides.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a narrow zigzag or stretch stitch; hem and sleeve hems overlocked and topstitched with a twin needle so they stay elastic.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Sewing knit fabric with stretch stitches, a separating zipper with a facing, welt pockets inserted into a panel seam and a drawcord hood.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with a brushed or terry back: sweatshirt jersey, knit-backed velvet (velour).

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (pocket welts)
  • 1 separating zipper, length to match the front
  • Elastic cord for the hood
  • 2 cord stoppers

Cutter's Must

  • Main fabric:
  • Front - 2 pieces
  • Back - 1 piece
  • Sleeve - 2 pieces
  • Side - 2 pieces
  • Hood - 2 pieces
  • Center hood - 1 piece
  • Facing - 2 pieces
  • Pocket bag - 4 pieces
  • Welt - 2 pieces

Tip: To ensure the material remains stretchy in the areas of finished seams, stitch the cut pieces with a narrow zigzag or special stretchy stitch. To keep the bottom edge stretchy, overlock the hem with an overlock stitch, then attach it using a twin needle. The same applies to finishing other edges of the garment that should not lose elasticity. These recommendations do not apply to industrial production.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Patch pocket with welt. Fuse the welt with fusible interfacing, fold in half, and press. Place pocket bags right sides together, insert the welt between them, and stitch the pocket opening edge. Turn out and press the pocket bags.
  2. Garment assembly. Place the finished patch pocket onto the side according to markings. Attach the side to the front, simultaneously inserting the patch pocket with welt. Topstitch the attachment seam. Stitch shoulder seams. Stitch side seams. Stitch sleeves. Set sleeves into armholes. Stitch hood parts. Make buttonholes on the hood according to markings. Fold and topstitch the allowance along the front edge of the hood. Set the hood into the neckline.
  3. Zipper closure. Place the zipper along the garment's front edge, right sides together (teeth facing away from the edge). Finish the front edges with the facing, simultaneously inserting the zipper. Finish the neckline with the facing and topstitch it to the shoulder seam.
  4. Press up the hem of the bottom and sleeves. Topstitch the bottom of the garment and the bottom of the sleeves.
  5. Press the finished jacket.
  6. Insert a cord into the hood.
