Tech. Description

Long Kimono Style Wrap Robe

A long women's wrap robe in kimono style: a straight body, wide elbow-length sleeves attached only part-way round the armhole, a folded band along the front edges and neck, in-seam pockets and a tie belt held by rouleau loops.

When To Wear

  • As a dressing gown at home: in silk for summer, in cotton flannel for colder months.
  • Over a nightdress or pyjamas.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight and loose, wrapped and tied at the waist.

Length: Below the knee.

Collar: A band folded in half lengthwise and stitched to the front edges and neckline in one piece, forming a kimono-style V-neck.

Sleeves: Wide straight sleeves on a dropped shoulder. The sleeve is set into the armhole only between notches; the remaining sleeve and armhole edges are turned under and topstitched, leaving an opening under the arm.

Closure: Wrap front tied with a belt; two narrow rouleau loops are caught into the side seams to hold it.

Pockets: In-seam pockets in the side seams, two bags per pocket.

Back: One piece cut on the fold.

Finishing: Hem turned up and topstitched; band seam allowances overlocked together.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight seams, in-seam pockets, a folded band and rouleau loops; the partly set sleeve needs accurate notch matching.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk or mixed-fibre fabrics, or cotton flannel.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Pocket bag - 4 pieces
  • Back - 1 piece on fold
  • Front - 2 pieces
  • Waistband - 1 piece
  • Placket - 1 piece
  • Sleeve - 2 pieces
  • Belt loop - 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. From each belt loop piece, stitch a narrow rouleau, fold them into loops, and baste them to the front between the notches.
  2. Fold the pocket bags with the pocket opening seam allowances right sides together and stitch precisely along the side seam line between the notches.
  3. Stitch the shoulder seams. Press seam allowances towards the back.
  4. Stitch the side seams from the second notch to the bottom, simultaneously stitching the pocket bags together.
  5. Stitch the sleeve seams and, without breaking the stitch, stitch the bottom edges up to the transverse notch and the top edges up to the first notch. Set the sleeves into the armholes between the second notches.
  6. Turn under and topstitch the seam allowances of the open sleeve and armhole edges.
  7. Fold the Placket in half lengthwise and stitch the short sides. Attach the folded Placket to the front edges and neckline. Overlock the seam allowances together.
  8. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side and topstitch.
  9. Stitch the waistband along the long and one short side, turn right side out, and press the folds. Turning under the open edge, topstitch the waistband 0.1 cm from the edge.
