Tech. Description

One Shoulder Paneled Slit Dress

A long, close-fitting women's one-shoulder dress with an asymmetric neckline, a front made of four pieces joined by angled seams, a high front slit and a narrow 0.5 cm strap on the bare shoulder. Fully lined, with a zip in the centre back seam and rhinestone trim along the strap and front seams.

When To Wear

  • Evening receptions, galas and formal dinners.
  • Warm-weather evenings; with heeled sandals, the slit gives room to walk.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Narrow column, close to the body from bust to hem.

Length: Long, to the ankle.

Neckline: Asymmetric one-shoulder neckline running diagonally from one shoulder to under the opposite arm; neckline and armholes are faced with the lining and understitched.

Sleeves: Sleeveless. A separate narrow strap, stitched to a finished width of 0.5 cm, is sewn above the front panel seam and under the back neckline edge; its length is adjusted at the fitting.

Front: Upper, middle and lower front pieces stitched together to the notches, with a side front piece joined by a vertical seam that ends in the slit.

Closure: Zip in the centre back seam, basted under the edges of the opening so that the teeth are not visible.

Back: Right and left back pieces with darts and a centre back seam.

Skirt: High slit at the front, in the seam between the lower front and side front; both slit edges are faced with the lining together with the hem.

Finishing: Rhinestone trim sewn along the strap, along the panel seam down to the slit and along the front seams; hem sewn by hand with blind stitches.

Lining: Full lining, cut as a mirror image of the main pieces, with a one-piece front (the upper, middle and side front patterns taped together, forming a dart at the armhole). Neckline and armhole edges reinforced with 2 cm interfacing strips; lining hem 1 cm shorter than the dress.

Level Of Difficulty

Advanced. Matching angled panel seams to notches, a mirror-cut lining with its own dart, a one-shoulder neckline faced with the lining, slit edges faced with lining and hem, and hand-sewn trim.

Fabric Recommendations

Light, draping fabrics of natural or blended fibres, such as silk crêpe; lining fabric.

Additional Supplies

  • Lining fabric
  • Fusible interfacing (2 cm strips for the lining neckline and armholes)
  • Rhinestone trim
  • 1 zip

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Strap – 1 piece
  • Upper Front – 1 piece
  • Middle Front – 1 piece
  • Lower Front – 1 piece
  • Side Front – 1 piece
  • Right Back – 1 piece
  • Left Back – 1 piece
  • From lining fabric:
  • Side Front – 1 piece
  • Right Back – 1 piece
  • Left Back – 1 piece

Also cut a lining front without seams: tape together the paper patterns of the Upper Front, Middle Front and Side Front; a dart will form at the armhole. Cut the lining pieces as mirror images of the main fabric pieces!

From fusible interfacing: 2 cm wide strips to reinforce the neckline and armhole edges of the lining pieces.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the Upper Front, Middle Front and Lower Front together, matching the notches. Stitch on the Side Front, leaving the slit open.
  2. Stitch the darts on the back and the center back seam, leaving the zipper opening unstitched. Overlock and press open the seam allowances, press the edges of the zipper opening. Baste the zipper under the edges of the opening so that the teeth are not visible, and stitch.
  3. Stitch the side seams.
  4. On the lining, stitch the darts and seams, leaving the shoulder seam unstitched. Press the shoulder seam allowances to the wrong side.
  5. Place the lining and the dress right sides together and stitch along the armholes and neckline, starting and ending at the shoulder seam line. Fold the lining to the inside and understitch it to the seam allowance; press. Turn under the lining allowances at the zipper opening and sew them to the zipper tape.
  6. Stitch the shoulder seam of the dress. Close the shoulder seam of the lining by hand.
  7. Hem the lining so that it is 1 cm shorter than the dress. Along one edge of the slit, fold the lining to the right side, place it on the dress right sides together and pin along the slit edge. Fold the dress hem allowance to the right side and pin it along the slit edge over the lining. Stitch the lining. Turn the dress hem allowance and the lining to the wrong side and press. Face the other slit edge with the lining and hem in the same way. Sew the dress hem allowance by hand with blind stitches.
  8. Fold the Strap in half lengthwise and stitch to a finished width of 0.5 cm. Sew the front end of the strap above the front panel seam. Try on the dress, adjust the strap length and sew the back end under the edge of the back neckline.
  9. Sew the rhinestone trim onto the strap, along the panel seam down to the slit, and along the front seams.
