Tech. Description

Wedding Dress with a Train

A long sleeveless women's wedding dress with a fitted darted bodice, a full skirt gathered into the waist seam and a hem that rises toward the centre front and falls into a train at the back. The bodice and skirt are lined; rhinestone trim edges the neckline, waist and hem, with decorative flowers at the shoulders.

When To Wear

  • Wedding ceremonies and receptions, for the bride.
  • Spring and summer celebrations: sleeveless, in brocade, satin and chiffon.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice shaped with front darts, with a full gathered skirt from the natural waist.

Length: Long, high-low: the hem curves up toward the centre front and extends into a train at the back.

Neckline: Wide, high rounded neckline at the front and a V-neck at the back, faced with the bodice lining.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with the armholes finished by the lining; decorative flowers attached at the shoulder seams.

Front: Bodice front cut on the fold with darts; front skirt cut on the fold.

Closure: Zip at the top of the centre back seam, set so that the teeth are not visible, with the tape ends turned under at the top.

Back: Back bodice and back skirt each in two pieces, joined by a centre back seam.

Skirt: Front and back panels gathered along the upper edge to the length of the bodice edge. Skirt pieces are cut in brocade, satin and chiffon; the chiffon is basted over the satin and handled as one layer.

Finishing: Rhinestone trim sewn along the neckline, the waist seam and the hem; waist seam allowance pressed toward the bodice; 1 cm turned hem.

Lining: Full lining; the bodice lining is backed with dense, soft interfacing, its shoulder edges turned in and joined edge to edge; the lining hem is 2 cm shorter than the dress.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A lined bodice turned through the shoulders, layering chiffon over satin, gathering a full skirt to the bodice, a zip set with hidden teeth and hand-sewn trim and flowers.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front and the side seams of the bodice, in both the main fabric and the lining.
  2. Place the lining on the bodice, right sides together, and stitch along the neckline and armholes, starting and ending exactly at the shoulder seam lines. Trim the seam allowances close to the stitching and turn the bodice right side out. Stitch the shoulder seams of the main-fabric bodice. Turn under the shoulder edges of the lining so they meet edge to edge and sew them together.
  3. Place the chiffon Back Skirt and Front Skirt pieces, wrong side down, on the right side of the satin skirt pieces, baste them together along the edges and treat them as one layer from here on. On the main-fabric and lining skirts, stitch the side seams and center back seams, leaving the top of the center back seam open for the zipper. Gather each skirt along the upper edge to the length of the bodice lower edge and stitch it to the bodice (main skirt to bodice, lining skirt to bodice lining). Press the waist seam allowance toward the bodice.
  4. Press the edges of the zipper opening. Place the zipper under the opening so that the teeth are not visible and stitch, turning under the ends of the zipper tape at the top.
  5. Hem the dress and the lining with a 1 cm turned hem so that the lining is 2 cm shorter than the dress.
  6. Sew the decorative trim along the neckline edge, along the waist seam and along the hem of the dress. Attach the decorative flowers at the shoulder seams.
