Tech. Description

Strappy Dress with Cascading Flounce and Slit

A women's floor-length dress on narrow straps, with princess seams, a straight-across neckline bound with self-fabric piping, and a cascading flounce set into the centre front seam above a front slit.

When To Wear

  • Summer evening events and weddings.
  • Formal parties where a long dress on straps is suitable, with a wrap or jacket over the shoulders.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting straight column, shaped by princess seams front and back and darts on the front.

Length: Floor length.

Neckline: Straight across at the front and back; the front neckline, upper back edge and armholes are bound with folded self-fabric piping, topstitched 1 mm from the fold.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, on narrow edgestitched straps. The front ends are sewn under the front corners; the back ends are sewn on after the length is adjusted at a fitting.

Front: A centre front seam with a single flounce sewn into it, wide end up, starting just below the neckline. Both free edges of the flounce are finished with a narrow double-turned hem, so the wrong side of the fabric shows in the folds. Below the flounce the seam opens into a slit.

Back: Princess seams and a centre back seam with a zipper stitched under the edges so the teeth are hidden.

Finishing: Slit allowances pressed under and topstitched; 1 cm turned-up hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Narrow double-turned hems on a curved flounce, setting the flounce into a seam, self-fabric binding on curved edges, a hidden zipper and fitting the straps.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight dressy fabrics from natural and blended fibres with a contrasting wrong side, such as silk.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the front.
  2. Finish the short straight edge and the long curved edge of the Flounce with a narrow rolled hem: fold the edge 1 cm to the wrong side and topstitch 1 mm from the fold. Trim the allowance 1 mm from the stitching, fold again as narrowly as possible and stitch over the previous line.
  3. Stitch the center front seam of the Middle Front pieces, inserting the Flounce between them, wide end up. Clip the seam allowance perpendicular to the seam. Stitch the princess seams on the back and front, the side seams, and the center back seam from the mark downwards.
  4. Press the zipper allowances to the wrong side. Place the zipper under the edges of the opening and stitch so that the teeth are not visible.
  5. Press the slit allowance to the wrong side and topstitch.
  6. Fold the Piping strips and Straps in half lengthwise, right sides out, and press. Unfold each strip, fold the raw edges to the center crease on the wrong side and fold the strip again along the crease. Trim the seam allowance along the top of the dress to 0.5 cm. Insert the front neckline edge into the finished Front Neckline Piping and topstitch 1 mm from the lower fold. Finish the upper back edge and the armholes in the same way with the Piping.
  7. Edgestitch the Straps. Sew the front ends under the corners of the front. Try on the dress, adjust the length of the straps and sew the back ends to the back.
  8. Finish the hem of the dress with a 1 cm turned-up hem.
