Tech. Description

Front Slit Long Sleeve Tunic

A women's pullover tunic with long set-in sleeves, a contrast band around the round neckline that runs down the centre front seam and opens into a slit at the hem, and a button-and-loop slit at the back neck.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer, with slim trousers or leggings.
  • Over a camisole when the openwork main fabric is see-through.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, loose tunic with bust darts.

Length: Tunic length, below the hip.

Neckline: Round, finished with a contrast facing that is turned to the right side and edgestitched, so it shows as a band.

Front: Centre front seam sewn wrong sides together and covered by the contrast front placket, which continues from the neckline band to the hem; the seam and the placket are left open at the bottom as a slit.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves with a contrast cuff band turned to the right side and topstitched; side seams and sleeve seams are sewn in one.

Back: Centre back seam with a slit at the top, closed with one button and a rouleau loop made from a 5 × 1.5 cm bias strip.

Finishing: Hem turned under twice and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A shaped facing applied to the right side and edgestitched around the neckline and down the front, a rouleau loop, set-in sleeves.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight silk or viscose fabrics: silk with an openwork pattern for the tunic, crepe-satin for the bands.

Additional Supplies

  • Crepe-satin for the neckline facing, front placket, cuffs and button loop
  • Fusible interfacing (neckline facing, front placket, cuffs)
  • 1 button

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center front seam with the Front pieces wrong sides together (the seam will be covered by the band), leaving a slit open at the bottom.
  2. Stitch the center back seam with the Back pieces right sides together, leaving a slit open at the top.
  3. Press the seam allowances open; press the allowances of the back slit to the wrong side.
  4. Stitch the darts and the shoulder seams.
  5. Place the Back Neckline Facings and Front Plackets right sides together and stitch the shoulder seams, then stitch the center front seam of the plackets, leaving the slit open.
  6. Press the allowances on the inner edges of the facing to the wrong side, clipping them at the corners.
  7. Stitch the right side of the facing to the wrong side of the neckline edge.
  8. From the contrast fabric, cut a bias strip 5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide and stitch it into a narrow rouleau.
  9. Fold the rouleau into a loop to fit the button and baste it to the left edge of the back slit.
  10. Clip the facing seam allowance at several places on the curves.
  11. Turn the facings to the right side and stitch them to the front edges of the slit.
  12. Baste the neckline facing and the Front Placket to the tunic and edgestitch, catching the loop.
  13. Press the upper allowances of the Cuffs to the wrong side.
  14. Stitch the right side of each Cuff to the wrong side of the sleeve along the hem edge, turn it to the right side and topstitch it onto the sleeve.
  15. Set the sleeves into the armholes.
  16. Stitch the side seams and sleeve seams in one continuous seam.
  17. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side, turn under and topstitch.
  18. Sew the button to the right side of the back slit so that the edges of the slit meet.
