Tech. Description

Halter V-Neck Seamed A-Line Dress

A sleeveless women's A-line dress with a deep V-neck and halter straps cut in one with the fronts. Centre front and centre back seams, bust darts, a zip in the centre back and bias-bound back and armhole edges.

When To Wear

  • In summer, for warm evenings, dinners and holidays.
  • On its own or with a light wrap, since the shoulders and upper back are bare.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, flaring from the bust to the hem.

Length: Around the knee.

Neckline: Deep V-neck. Each front is cut in one with its strap; the straps are pleated and joined by a seam at the back of the neck to form a halter.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with cut-away armholes.

Front: Two fronts joined by a centre front seam, shaped with bust darts pressed downwards.

Back: Two backs with a centre back seam and a zip set so that the teeth are not visible. The upper back edge sits below the shoulder blades.

Finishing: The back edge, armholes and strap edges are finished with a folded bias strip of the main fabric, turned to the inside so that the edge of the dress rolls about 1 mm inwards, and topstitched 0.7 cm from the edge. The V-neck edge and hem are serged, turned under and topstitched at 0.7 cm.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Pleated halter straps, a zip with hidden teeth and bias binding with a narrow edge on a fine stretch fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin, stretch dress fabrics, such as crepe de chine with elastic fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Zip for the centre back seam

Fabric & Materials

Fabric recommendations: elastic thin dress fabrics. You will need: Crepe de chine with elastic fibers, 150 cm wide.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Front (cut in one with the strap) – 2 pieces
  • Bias binding strips – 2 pieces (cut on the bias, no pattern piece)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front pieces and the center front seam. Press the darts downwards and press the seam open.
  2. Stitch the center back seam up to the zipper marking and press the seam allowances open. Insert the zipper so that the teeth are not visible.
  3. Form the pleats on the straps, then stitch the side seams and the center back seam of the straps. Press the seam allowances open.
  4. Serge the neckline and hem allowances, turn them to the wrong side and topstitch 0.7 cm from the edge.
  5. Press the bias binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Place the binding on the right side of the dress, matching its raw edges with the edges of the back, armholes and straps, leaving 1 cm extending at the zipper. Stitch the binding with a 1 cm seam. Trim the seam allowances to 0.4 cm. Turn the binding to the wrong side so that the edge of the dress rolls about 1 mm to the inside and the binding does not show on the right side, fold in the ends of the binding at the zipper, and topstitch 0.7 cm from the edge.
