Bias Cut Strap Maxi Dress

A women's maxi dress on narrow straps, with a short darted bodice joined at an empire seam to a flared skirt cut on the bias, a centre back zip and a full lining.

When To Wear

  • Summer evenings and warm-weather events.
  • With a cardigan or a short jacket over it in spring.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting bodice, skirt flaring gradually to the hem.

Length: Floor length.

Neckline: Low rounded neckline at front and back, faced by the lining.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, on narrow straps stitched as tubes; the back ends are sewn in after a fitting to set the strap length.

Waist: Empire seam under the bust; the bodice is shaped with two darts at the front and two at the back.

Skirt: Front skirt cut on the fold and back skirt in two pieces, both on the bias.

Back: Centre back seam with a zip in the upper part.

Finishing: The dress hangs for a day before the hemline is marked again; hem blind-stitched by hand.

Lining: Full lining cut from the same pieces, attached at the neckline and armholes, stitched to the zip tape and waist seam; lining hem 1.5 cm shorter than the dress.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Handling bias-cut skirt pieces and their hem, a lined bodice finished around the zip, and fitting the strap length.

Sewing Instructions

  1. The Front Skirt and Back Skirt pieces are cut on the bias.
  2. Before hemming, let the dress hang for a day, then mark the hemline again.
  3. Stitch the darts and press them flat.
  4. Stitch the side seams and attach the skirt to the bodice.
  5. Stitch the center back seam from the hem up to the zipper marking.
  6. Insert the zipper.
  7. Fold each Strap lengthwise in half, right sides together, stitch along the long edge, turn right side out and press.
  8. Baste the front ends of the straps under the upper corners of the Front.
  9. On the lining pieces, stitch the darts and seams.
  10. Place the dress and the lining right sides together.
  11. Fold back the center back seam allowances of the lining Back pieces so that they stop 5 mm short of the zipper edges, and pin them to the neckline.
  12. Fold the seam allowances along the zipper edges of the dress to the right side.
  13. Stitch the lining to the dress along the armholes and neckline, catching the front ends of the straps.
  14. Turn the lining to the inside and stitch it to the zipper tape and to the waist seam allowances.
  15. Try on the dress, adjust the strap length and stitch the back ends of the straps under the upper corners of the Back.
