Tech. Description

Tie-Waist Trousers

Women's low-rise trousers, full length with straight legs, in-seam side pockets and no waistband: the top edge is turned under and topstitched, and twelve wide belt loops carry a separate tie belt knotted at the front.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with a cropped or short top.
  • For travel and holidays, with flat shoes or sandals.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Low rise, close over the hips, straight legs.

Length: Full length.

Pockets: In-seam pockets in the side seams, two pocket bags per pocket. The front edge of the opening is topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge, with stitching across the ends to the side seam.

Waist: No waistband and no fly. The top edge allowance is turned to the wrong side and topstitched close to the edge and again 0.75 cm from it. Belt loops are cut from three interfaced strips, each cut into four loops; each loop is folded and sewn in at the top edge, pointing down, then turned up.

Finishing: Crotch seam stitched twice; tie belt made from a strip folded in half, edgestitched and threaded through the loops. Hem topstitched 3 cm and 3.5 cm from the edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. In-seam pockets, belt loops, a turned and topstitched top edge and a tie belt. No zip, no waistband, no lining.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Place one front half and one back half right sides together and stitch the side seams above and below the pocket opening marks. Press the seam allowances open.
  2. In-seam pockets: On the wrong side, pin the pocket bags right sides together to the front and back pocket opening allowances. Stitch the pocket bags exactly along the fold lines of the pocket openings and along the seams up to the top edge of the trousers. Press the front pocket bag forward. From the right side, topstitch the front edge of the opening 0.5 cm from the edge; at the ends of the opening, stitch across to the side seam. Lay the back pocket bag forward. Stitch the pocket bags together, catching the seam allowances of the front halves. Baste the pocket bags to the top edge of the trousers.
  3. Stitch the inseams. Press the seam allowances open.
  4. Place one leg inside the other, right sides together. Stitch the front and back crotch seam twice. Press the seam allowances open down to the curves.
  5. Belt loops: Fold the interfaced belt-loop strips in half lengthwise, right sides together. Stitch the long edges 3 cm from the fold. Trim the seam allowances to 0.5 cm. Turn the strips right side out and press. Edgestitch both edges. Cut each strip into 4 equal belt loops. Fold the belt loops in half widthwise and pin them, pointing downwards, to the top edge of the trousers between the marks, with the raw ends on the seam allowance. Stitch the belt loops. Baste the top edge allowance to the wrong side, folding the belt loops upwards. Topstitch the top edge of the trousers close to the edge and again 0.75 cm from the edge.
  6. Tie belt: Fold the waistband strip in half lengthwise, right side in, stitch the ends and stitch the long edges 4 cm from the fold, leaving an opening of approx. 3 cm for turning. Trim the seam allowances to 0.5 cm and clip the corners. Turn the belt right side out, press and edgestitch. Thread the belt through the belt loops.
  7. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side and baste. From the right side, topstitch 3 cm and 3.5 cm from the hem edge.
