Tech. Description

Asymmetric Button Front Tunic

A women's knit tunic top with an off-centre vertical seam on the front, a pleat along it held down by six buttons, a front hem that slopes down to one side, and short sleeves finished with turn-back cuffs.

When To Wear

  • Spring and summer, with slim trousers, jeans or a pencil skirt.
  • Office and everyday wear; the longer front point covers the hips.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, slightly widening towards the hem, pulled on over the head with no opening.

Length: Tunic length, below the hip; the front hem runs at an angle and is longest at the side opposite the button line, the back hem is straight.

Neckline: Round, finished with a facing.

Sleeves: Short, set-in, with a cuff folded in half and turned up onto the right side.

Front: Cut as a right and a left front joined by a vertical seam off the centre; a pleat formed along this seam is turned towards the left side seam, topstitched and finished with a turned corner at the hem. Six buttons are sewn through the pleat to hold it; there are no buttonholes.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with no seams.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on an overlocker; hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. A pull-on knit top with few pieces; the pleat corner and the neckline facing need careful work.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabric of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • 6 buttons
  • Fusible interfacing (cuffs, neckline facings)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance for the blouse bottom – 2.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical parts).

  • From main fabric:
    • Back - 1 piece on fold
    • Right front - 1 piece
    • Left front – 1 piece
    • Sleeve - 2 pieces
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Front neckline facing – 1 piece
    • Back neckline facing – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Front neckline facing – 1 piece
    • Back neckline facing – 1 piece

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.
