Tech. Description

Asymmetrical Shawl Collar Gathered Jumper

A women's pull-on knit jumper of tunic length with an asymmetrical wrapped collar fastened with three buttons and rouleau loops, gathers at the centre front below the collar, and two slanted single-welt pockets.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and winter with trousers, jeans or leggings.
  • As a warm top layer for everyday wear, with the collar closed high at the neck.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, slightly loose through the body; for knit fabric with medium stretch.

Length: Tunic length, below the hip.

Collar: Wide asymmetrical collar cut in two halves with a centre back seam, each half double and interfaced. The right part laps over the left at the front and fastens with three buttons in rouleau loops sewn into its edge.

Front: One piece. The centre part of the upper edge is gathered into the collar seam; there is no front opening and the jumper is pulled on over the head.

Sleeves: Long, straight, one-piece set-in sleeves.

Pockets: Two slanted single-welt pockets on the lower front.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, no centre back seam.

Finishing: Hems of the body and sleeves turned up and topstitched (2 cm allowance), with a twin needle or coverstitch to keep the stretch.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Welt pockets in knit fabric, rouleau button loops, a layered asymmetrical collar set into a gathered front and a clipped back neckline.

Fabric Recommendations

Dense knit fabric with medium stretch from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • 3 buttons
  • Knit fusible interfacing (collar, welts)

Fabric & Materials

Also needed: 3 buttons; knit fusible interfacing.

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: hem allowance for the garment and sleeves – 2 cm, other seams 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need.

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Collar – 4 pieces
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Off-Set Welt – 2 pieces
    • Big Pocket Bag – 2 pieces
    • Smaller Pocket Bag – 2 pieces
    • Bias strip for the button loops, 2.5 × 13 cm – 1 piece (cut by measurement)
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Collar – 2 pieces
    • Off-Set Welt – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Mark the pocket placement. Press the Off-Set Welt in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Stitch the Smaller Pocket Bag to the inner side of the welt. Stitch the welt to the front along the lower pocket marking line. Stitch the Big Pocket Bag to the front along the upper pocket marking line. The stitching lines should end at the short marking lines. Cut the pocket opening, making diagonal cuts into the corners 1–1.5 cm from the ends. Turn the welt and the Big Pocket Bag through the opening to the wrong side. Secure the pocket ends on the wrong side with a double row of backstitching across the base of the triangles. Stitch the pocket bags together.
  2. Cut a bias strip 2.5 cm wide and 13 cm long for the button loops. Fold the strip lengthwise in half, right sides together, and stitch 0.3 cm from the fold. Trim the seam allowances close to the stitching, turn the strip right side out and straighten it into a rouleau. Cut it into three parts. Adjust the loop length.
  3. Fuse interfacing to the Collar pieces. Stitch the Collar pieces in pairs along the centre back seam and press the seam allowances open. Place the collar right sides together and stitch along the outer edge, inserting the button loops on the right side according to the markings. Turn the collar right side out and press. Lap the right part of the collar over the left and baste them together along the lower edge.
  4. Run a gathering stitch (loosened upper thread) along the upper edge of the centre front and gather. Stitch the collar to the front, press the seam allowances and overlock.
  5. Stitch the shoulder seams, press the seam allowances and overlock.
  6. Stitch the collar to the back neckline, clipping into the corners, press the seam allowances and overlock.
  7. Set the sleeves into the open armholes, matching the notches, press the seam allowances and overlock. Stitch the sleeve seams and side seams in one, press the seam allowances and overlock.
  8. Overlock the hem of the garment and the sleeve hems, fold to the wrong side, press and topstitch.
  9. Sew on the buttons according to the markings. On the wrong side, secure the left part of the collar to the attachment seam.
