Tech. Description

Ruffled Stand Collar Bow Tie Blouse

A sleeveless women's blouse with a narrow folded frill collar pleated into the neckline, a ribbon stitched over the collar seam and tied in a bow at the front, and folded frill cap sleeves. Shaped with darts front and back.

When To Wear

  • In summer, tucked into or worn over a skirt or trousers.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan for office wear.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, shaped by darts on the front and on the back.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Collar: A single collar piece folded in half lengthwise and set into the neckline with small random pleats, so it stands as a narrow frill. The neckline and front neck opening are finished with an interfaced facing.

Front: Cut in one piece on the fold, with darts. A decorative ribbon 0.5–0.8 cm wide is topstitched over the collar seam, its ends left free to tie a bow.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with cap sleeves (folded in half and pleated into the upper armhole) forming frills over the shoulders; the lower armhole is finished with a 4 cm bias binding.

Back: Centre back seam and two darts.

Finishing: Hem overlocked and turned up 2 cm.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Darts, a folded collar and cap sleeves pleated into the seams, a neckline facing and bias-bound armholes; no fastenings.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (neckline facings)
  • Decorative ribbon, 0.5–0.8 cm wide (approximate length is marked on the front pattern piece)
  • Bias binding, 4 cm wide (or cut from the main fabric)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: Hem allowance – 2 cm; other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Cap Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Collar – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces.
  2. Stitch the darts on the Front. Press the darts upwards. Stitch the darts on the Back. Press the darts towards the center. Stitch the center back seam, overlock allowances and press to the left side.
  3. Stitch side and shoulder seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  4. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Front Neckline Facing and Back Neckline Facing. Press allowances open. Overlock the outer edge.
  5. Fold the Collar lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the ends. Trim allowances, turn right side out, and press. Stitch the Collar to the neckline, forming small random pleats.
  6. Place the facing on the blouse right sides together (the collar is positioned between the facing and the neckline) and stitch around the neckline and the front neck opening. Trim allowances, clip curves, turn the facing to the wrong side. Secure the facing to the shoulder seams. From the right side, topstitch the decorative ribbon over the collar attachment seam, leaving the ends free to tie a bow.
  7. Fold each Cap Sleeve lengthwise in half, right side out, and press. Stitch the Cap Sleeve to the armhole, forming small random pleats. Overlock the allowances.
  8. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the length of the lower armhole + 5 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Place the binding with the armhole edge right sides together and stitch. Clip allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  9. Overlock the hem allowance, turn it to the wrong side and press.
