Tech. Description

Side-Gathered Tie Blouse with Peplum

A women's pull-on blouse with cut-on sleeves finished with cuffs, a front gathered along its lower left edge into a hip-level peplum band, and a self-fabric bow sewn at the left side.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with straight trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • At the office, worn over slim-fitting bottoms so the peplum band stays visible.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose bodice with cut-on sleeves and no armhole seams, drawn in at the hip by the peplum band.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Round neckline finished with front and back facings that are tacked to the shoulder seams.

Sleeves: Cut in one with the front and back, elbow length, finished with cuffs cut in one piece and folded in half.

Front: One piece, gathered along the lower left edge where it joins the peplum. No closures; the blouse slips on over the head.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with no centre back seam.

Waist: Double-layer peplum band made of a back piece and separate right and left front pieces; the front ends are rounded and the right front peplum overlaps the left. A tie made from a separate strip is knotted into a bow and sewn onto the peplum seam.

Finishing: Side and shoulder seams overlocked and pressed towards the back; peplum seam allowances pressed upwards.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight seams, a faced neckline, gathering, folded cuffs and a self-lined band; there are no set-in sleeves or fastenings.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin blouse fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Back Neckline Facing, Front Neckline Facing and Cuff pieces.
  2. Stitch the side and shoulder seams. Overlock the allowances and press them towards the back.
  3. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Back Neckline Facing and Front Neckline Facing. Overlock the outer edge. Place the facing right sides together with the neckline and stitch. Clip the allowances, turn the facing to the wrong side and press. Secure the facing at the shoulder seams.
  4. Along the lower left edge of the front, run a line of stitching with a loosened upper thread and gather.
  5. Stitch the side seams of the peplums (Back Peplum to Right Front Peplum and Left Front Peplum). Press the allowances open. Place the two peplum layers right sides together and stitch along the lower and front edges. Clip the allowances at the curves, trim at the corners, turn the peplum right side out and press.
  6. Place the right front peplum over the left front peplum and baste them together along the upper edge. Attach the peplum to the blouse, matching the notches. Overlock the allowances and press them upwards.
  7. Stitch the Cuff into a loop, fold it in half and press. Attach the outer layer of the Cuff to the sleeve, directing the allowances towards the Cuff. Fold under the allowance of the inner layer and topstitch it into the attachment seam.
  8. Fold the Waistband piece in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the edges, leaving an opening. Trim the allowances at the corners and turn right side out through the opening. Slipstitch the opening closed by hand. Tie the Waistband into a bow and sew it onto the peplum attachment seam.
