Tech. Description

Sleeveless Gathered Front Neckline Blouse

A women's sleeveless hip-length blouse with a square neckline. The front is gathered by elastic in a casing along the neckline and by a second elastic stitched below the bust, and falls loose to a flared hem.

When To Wear

  • In summer with shorts, jeans or a straight skirt.
  • Under a cardigan or light jacket in spring.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Gathered under the bust at the front, loose and widening towards the hem.

Length: Hip length; hem turned up 1.5 cm and topstitched.

Neckline: Square, finished with a facing. A casing stitched 1 cm from the edge along the lower front neckline holds elastic that gathers the front.

Sleeves: Sleeveless. The armholes are finished with the same front and back facings as the neckline, sewn in two steps: front armhole first, then back.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, with elastic stitched to the wrong side along a marked line below the bust.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam; plain, with no closure.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pattern pieces; the work is a combined neckline and armhole facing, an elastic casing and elastic stitched flat.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic, 0.7 cm wide (approximate length marked on the front pattern piece)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance — 1.5 cm, other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front facing — 1 piece
    • Back facing — 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock the allowance and press it to the left side. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the blouse. Overlock the allowances and press them towards the back.
  2. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the facings. Overlock the allowances and press them towards the back. Overlock the outer edge of the facings.
  3. Face the neckline with the facing. Clip the allowances at the curves and turn the facing to the wrong side. Face the armhole in two steps: first face the front armhole, then the back armhole. Clip the allowances, press the armhole.
  4. Stitch along the bottom of the front neckline 1 cm from the seam, creating a casing. Thread the elastic through the casing and secure the ends.
  5. Stitch the elastic tape on the wrong side along the marked line.
  6. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press it to the wrong side and stitch.
