Tech. Description

Jersey Top with Cuffed Dolman Sleeves

A women's knit top with long dolman sleeves cut in one with the front and back, gathered into deep cuffs, a wide hem band and an elasticated neckband with cord bows at the shoulders. For stretch fabric.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and spring with jeans or slim trousers.
  • As an everyday top; the hem band keeps it close at the hips.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose through the body and sleeves, drawn in by the hem band.

Neckline: Round neckline with a folded band, cut 6 cm wide, enclosing an elastic ring; the band seam sits at the left shoulder. A bow of decorative cord with tipped ends is hand-sewn at each shoulder seam.

Sleeves: Long dolman sleeves cut in one with the body, joined by the shoulder and upper sleeve seam and the side and underarm seam. The lower edge is gathered into a folded cuff.

Front: Front and back each cut in one piece on the fold.

Waist: Folded hem band cut on the fold, joined into a ring with the seam at the left side, attached with the top slightly stretched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pattern pieces; the work is gathering knit into cuffs and attaching folded bands with stretch stitches or an overlocker.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative cord
  • 4 cord ends
  • Elastic, 2 cm wide

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 0.7 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Lower Part – 1 piece on fold
    • Cuff – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch shoulder seams and upper sleeve seams. Finish allowances and press towards the back. Stitch side seams and lower sleeve seams. Finish allowances and press towards the back.
  2. Cut a neckline band 6 cm wide (the length is given on the Front pattern piece). Stitch the band into a ring, fold it in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Stitch the elastic into a ring. Insert the elastic into the band and secure with a temporary stitch along the lower edge of the elastic, leaving seam allowances. Stitch the band to the neckline, slightly stretching the band. The seam is located at the level of the left shoulder seam. Remove the temporary stitch.
  3. Stitch each Cuff into a ring. Along the lower edge of the sleeve, make a gathering stitch with a loosened upper thread and gather. Fold the cuff in half lengthwise and attach to the sleeve. Finish the allowance.
  4. Stitch the Lower Part into a ring. Fold it in half lengthwise and stitch it to the lower edge of the top, slightly stretching the lower edge. The seam is located at the level of the left side seam. Finish the allowance.
  5. Form a bow from the decorative cord and hand-stitch it to the neckline at the level of the shoulder seams. Attach the cord ends (aglets) to the cord tips.
