Tech. Description

Color Block Batwing Sleeve Top

A loose women's top for knit fabric in two colours, with batwing sleeves cut in one with the body and diagonal seams dividing the front and back into colour blocks.

When To Wear

  • Every day with jeans, slim trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • In spring and autumn on its own, or under an open jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Wide through the body and sleeves, narrowing to the hip.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Round neckline, edge overlocked, turned to the inside and topstitched.

Sleeves: Batwing, cut in one with the front and back; the shoulder seam continues into the upper sleeve seam and the side seam into the underarm seam. Sleeves end above the elbow.

Front: Two pieces, one in each colour, joined by a diagonal seam running from the shoulder to the opposite hem.

Back: Centre back seam, crossed by a diagonal seam: the upper back pieces are in the first colour, the lower back pieces in the second.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hems topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight construction in knit fabric; the only care needed is matching the diagonal seams across the centre back.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabric in two colours, from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Sleeve hem allowance – 1.5 cm, neckline allowance - 1.5 cm, garment hem allowance – 2 cm, other seams 0.7 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Note! Markings on the patterns are on the right side.

  • From main fabric 1:
    • Left front – 1 piece
    • Upper left back – 1 piece
    • Upper right back – 1 piece
  • From main fabric 2:
    • Right front - 1 piece
    • Lower left back – 1 piece
    • Lower right back – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

  1. Stitch the upper and lower front parts. Overlock allowances and press down.
  2. Stitch the center back seam on the upper parts. Overlock allowance and press to the left side. Stitch the center back seam on the lower parts. Overlock allowance and press to the left side.
  3. Stitch the upper and lower back parts. Overlock allowances and press down.
  4. Stitch shoulder seams simultaneously with the upper sleeve seam. Overlock allowance. Stitch side seams, simultaneously stitching the lower sleeve seam. Overlock allowance.
  5. Overlock the neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  6. Overlock the garment hem and sleeve hem. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
