Tech. Description

Crossover Neck Jersey Top

A women's hip-length top for knit fabric with short set-in sleeves, a V neckline filled by a folded collar band that crosses at the front, and gathers at the centre front below the crossover.

When To Wear

  • Every day in spring and summer, with jeans or a skirt.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan for work.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, slightly shaped at the waist, for stretch knit.

Length: Hip length.

Collar: One-piece band folded in half lengthwise, its short ends lapped right over left at the front and set into the V neckline, clipped at the corner.

Front: One piece, gathered along the lower edge of the front neckline between marks.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves with one seam.

Back: One piece, no seams.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hems turned up and topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pieces in knit fabric; the one careful step is setting the lapped collar into the corner of the V neckline.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabric from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: Hem allowance for the garment bottom and sleeve hem – 1.5 cm, other seams 0.8 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need.

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Back – 1 piece
    • Collar – 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Stitch shoulder and side seams. Overlock allowances and press towards the back.
  2. Stitch the sleeve seam. Overlock allowance and press towards the back. Set the sleeve into the armhole, matching notches. Overlock allowance.
  3. Along the lower edge of the front neckline between the round marks, make stitches with loosely tensioned threads and gather.
  4. Fold the collar in half lengthwise, right side out, and secure all raw edges. Overlap the short sides of the collar (right side on top) and secure the raw edges. Stitch the collar into the neckline, clipping into the corners. Overlock allowances.
  5. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and the sleeve hem. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
