Tech. Description

Notched Yoke Blouse

A women's pull-on blouse with long set-in sleeves and a V-neck slit finished with two overlapping plackets. A back yoke carries the shoulder seams forward onto the front, and the sleeves end in bias-bound slits, a pleat and buttoned cuffs.

When To Wear

  • For the office with straight trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • In spring and autumn with jeans, worn loose over the waistband.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight and relaxed, hip length; bust darts on the front only where the size requires them.

Neckline: Round neck with a V-shaped slit at the centre front, finished with two interfaced plackets; the right placket lies over the left and the ends are stitched together at the base of the slit.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, with no button opening; the garment goes on over the head.

Back: Back cut on the fold under a back yoke that extends over the shoulders to the front. The yoke faces the back neckline, and its lower edge is topstitched to the back from the right side.

Sleeves: Long one-piece set-in sleeves. The slit at the wrist is bound with a 4 cm bias strip of the main fabric; a pleat beside it is turned away from the opening.

Finishing: Interfaced cuffs, each fastened with 2 buttons; hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. An overlapping placket set into a slit with clipped corners, a yoke that faces the neckline, bias-bound sleeve slits, cuffs with buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (cuffs, plackets)
  • 4 buttons (2 for each cuff)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included; if the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams – 1 cm; hem allowance – 2 cm. First print the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (90–150 cm) to determine how much fabric you need (remember paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Placket – 2 pieces
    • Back Yoke – 1 piece
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Cuff – 2 pieces
    • Placket – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Interface the pieces with fusible interfacing.
  2. Stitch the darts on the front pieces (if provided by size). Press the dart allowances upwards.
  3. Fold the plackets in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the upper side. Trim the allowance, turn right side out, and press. Attach the plackets to the front along the long edge, stopping 1 cm from the bottom. Clip the front allowance at the corners, stopping 1 mm from the stitching line. Overlap the right placket over the left. Stitch the ends of the plackets, folding back the front and securing the bottom edge. Overlock the allowances.
  4. Overlock the bottom edge of the Back Yoke. Place the back and the Back Yoke right sides together and stitch the neckline. Trim the allowances, clip at curves, turn the yoke to the wrong side, and press.
  5. Attach the back and yoke to the front, inserting the front allowance between the yoke and the back. Topstitch the bottom edge of the yoke to the back from the right side.
  6. Stitch the side seams. Overlock the allowances and press towards the back.
  7. Make a slit on the sleeve along the marked line. Cut a bias binding from the main fabric 4 cm wide and a length equal to twice the slit length + 4 cm. Fold the binding in half lengthwise and press. Press the outer allowances towards the center. Finish the sleeve slit with bias binding. Fold and secure the pleat on the sleeve, with its depth turned away from the opening.
  8. Stitch the sleeve seam. Overlock the allowance and press towards the back. Set the sleeves into the armholes. Overlock the allowance and press.
  9. Fold the cuff pieces in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the side edges. Start and end the stitching exactly at the marked cuff attachment seam line. Turn the piece right side out, press. Attach the outer side of the cuff to the sleeve, fold the allowance of the inner side of the cuff inwards, and topstitch into the seam of the outer cuff attachment.
  10. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment. Press the allowances to the wrong side and topstitch.
  11. Make buttonholes on the cuffs. Sew buttons onto the cuffs.
