Pattern #2538

A women's sleeveless V-neck dress with no waist seam, a seven-button front and a separate belt. Gathered ruffles in a second fabric are sewn on along a diagonal line, so the hem drops from about knee level on one side to ankle level on the other. Drafted to your own measurements. Recommended fabric: dress fabrics with good drape, in natural or blended fibres, in two contrasting or related colours: one for the bodice, back and facings, the other for the inset, ruffles and belt.

Tech. Description

Two-Tone Button Front Asymmetrical Dress

A women's sleeveless V-neck dress with no waist seam, a seven-button front and a separate belt. Gathered ruffles in a second fabric are sewn on along a diagonal line, so the hem drops from about knee level on one side to ankle level on the other.

When To Wear

  • In summer, for daytime events, holidays and warm evenings.
  • With flat or heeled sandals; the belt can be worn or left off.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight through the body, without a waist seam, held in at the waist by a separate belt.

Length: Asymmetrical: shortest on the left side, longest on the right side, where the hem reaches the ankle.

Neckline: V-neck at the front, high round neck at the back, finished with front facings and a back neck facing.

Front: Asymmetrical. A princess seam on the right front joins a contrast inset at the side. Gathered ruffles are sewn on along a diagonal line: the left one from the front edge to the side seam, the right one to the princess seam. Each has a cut-on facing at the front edge.

Closure: Buttons all the way down the front, through the bodice and the ruffles; buttonholes on the right front.

Back: Horizontal back yoke; a gathered contrast ruffle is sewn on below a diagonal seam.

Waist: Separate belt in the contrast fabric, folded in half lengthwise, fastened with 2 hooks and loops; its length is adjusted at fitting.

Finishing: Seams overlocked; hem overlocked, turned up 1.2 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathered ruffles sewn between the front and its facing, a princess seam clipped into a corner, buttonholes and an asymmetrical hem.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics with good drape, in natural or blended fibres, in two contrasting or related colours: one for the bodice, back and facings, the other for the inset, ruffles and belt.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (front facings, back neck facing)
  • 7 buttons
  • 2 hooks with loops

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance for the dress bottom – 1.2 cm; allowance along the front edge of the right and left front ruffles (grown-on facing) – 6.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical details). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Attention! All markings on the patterns are made on the right side!

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the designated pieces.
  2. Stitch the Back Yoke to the Back, press seam allowances upwards and overlock. Along the upper edge of the Back Trimming (back ruffle), sew a gathering stitch with loosened upper thread tension and gather. Stitch the ruffle to the Back, press seam allowances upwards and overlock.
  3. Overlock the outer edges of the Right and Left Center Front Facings. Place the facings on the fronts, right sides together, and stitch along the neckline and front edges. Clip the seam allowances, turn the facings to the wrong side, shape, and press. From now on treat each facing and front as one piece.
  4. Left front. Overlock the edge of the grown-on facing of the Left Front Ruffle. Along the upper edge of the Left Front Ruffle, from the front edge to the side seam, sew a gathering stitch with loosened upper thread tension and gather. Stitch the ruffle to the Left Front, placing the ruffle between the front and its facing, press seam allowances upwards and overlock. Turn the facing to the wrong side, straighten, and press.
  5. Right front. Overlock the edge of the grown-on facing of the Right Front Ruffle. Along the upper edge of the Right Front Ruffle, from the front edge to the princess seam, sew a gathering stitch with loosened upper thread tension and gather. Stitch the ruffle to the Right Front, placing the ruffle between the front and its facing, press seam allowances upwards and overlock. Turn the facing to the wrong side, shape, and press. Stitch the princess seam joining the Front Inset, clipping the Right Front into the corner, press seam allowances towards the center, and overlock.
  6. Overlock the outer edge of the Back Neckline Facing. Place the facing on the Back, right sides together, and stitch along the neckline exactly up to the marked shoulder seam line. Clip the seam allowances, turn the facing to the wrong side, shape, and press.
  7. Stitch the shoulder seams, inserting the front between the Back and the Back Neckline Facing, press seam allowances towards the back and overlock.
  8. Stitch the side seams, press seam allowances towards the back and overlock.
  9. Overlock the hem allowance of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  10. Make buttonholes on the Right Front. Sew the buttons to the Left Front.
  11. Fold the Waistband (belt) in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch, inserting the hooks into one short end and leaving an opening on the long side for turning. Turn the belt right side out, shape, and press. Stitch the opening closed. Adjust the belt length and sew on the eyes (loops) for the hooks.
