Tech. Description

Shaped Armhole Tunic

A women's sleeveless A-line tunic with V-necklines at front and back, deeply cut-in angular armholes and a concealed zip in the centre back seam. The neckline and armholes are finished with a full self-fabric lining.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own, or over a fitted top or T-shirt in cooler weather.
  • With leggings or slim trousers, or as a short dress.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, close at the shoulders and widening to the hem, with no darts.

Length: Long tunic length, reaching about the knee on the drawing.

Neckline: V-neck at the front and a deeper V-neck at the back, both faced by the lining.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; the armholes are cut in deeply and angled at the back, leaving narrow shoulder straps. Each armhole is stitched to the lining in two steps, front first, then back.

Front: One piece cut on the fold.

Closure: Concealed zip in the centre back seam; the seam is stitched from the zip mark to the hem and pressed open.

Back: Two back pieces joined by a centre back seam.

Lining: Front and back lining cut from the main fabric and fused with interfacing; the lining hem is overlocked, turned and topstitched separately from the outer hem.

Finishing: Shoulder seams pressed open, side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back; hem overlocked, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Neckline and armholes bagged out with a lining, the armholes in two steps, and a concealed zip set through both layers.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Concealed zip
  • Fusible interfacing (front lining, back lining)

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance – 1.5 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Front Lining – 1 piece on fold
    • Back Lining – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Front Lining – 1 piece on fold
    • Back Lining – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Interface the Front Lining and Back Lining with fusible interfacing.
  2. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the outer garment (Front and Backs). Press shoulder seam allowances open. Overlock side seam allowances and press towards the back.
  3. Assemble the Front Lining and Back Lining in the same way. Overlock the bottom edge of the lining, fold inwards, and topstitch.
  4. Place the main fabric and lining right sides together and stitch the neckline. Clip the allowances, turn the lining to the inside, and press.
  5. Stitch the armholes together with the lining in two steps: first the front armhole, then the back armhole. Clip the allowance, press the seam.
  6. Baste the center back edges of the main fabric and lining together. Overlock the center edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the bottom, press the allowance open. Insert the zipper.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side, and topstitch.
