Tech. Description

Asymmetrical Draped Sleeveless Top

A women's sleeveless top with a round neckline, a waist seam and an asymmetric front: a free diagonal flap of the lower front is folded into a pleat and falls to a pointed hem, over a narrow folded insert at the waist. Invisible zipper in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • At the office with straight trousers or a pencil skirt, alone in summer or under a jacket.
  • For dinners and daytime events with slim trousers.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bodice, with a waist seam front and back; the front hem drops to a point on one side.

Neckline: Round, finished with interfaced facings and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with a 4 cm bias binding folded in half and topstitched along the fold.

Front: Upper front with a side bust dart. The lower front has a diagonal free edge, hemmed by topstitching, that forms a pleat at the waist and is tacked to the lower front from the wrong side. Under it sits a folded insert.

Back: Upper back cut on the fold and lower back, both with darts, joined by a waist seam.

Closure: Invisible zipper in the left side seam.

Finishing: Hem serged, turned up 1.5 cm and topstitched. The piece labels are printed on the right side of the fabric, which matters for the asymmetric pieces.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Asymmetric front pieces that must be cut right side up, a pleated flap sewn into a waist seam, an invisible side zipper and bias-bound armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics from natural or blended fibres.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch darts on back pieces. Press dart allowances towards the center of the pieces.
  2. Attach the lower back to the upper back. Overlock the allowance and press it upwards.
  3. Stitch the dart on the front piece. Press the dart allowance upwards.
  4. On the lower flying of the front, clip the allowance at the lower pleat mark. Overlock the bias flying of the front. Fold the allowance inwards and topstitch.
  5. Overlock the center edge of the lower front. Fold the allowance inwards and topstitch. Fold the insert in half lengthwise, right side up, and press. Place the insert on the lower front, align the edges, and secure along the upper edge.
  6. Secure the pleat allowances together. Turn the flying of the front upwards, fold the upper and lower front parts right sides together, and stitch the waist seam. Overlock the allowance and press it upwards. From the wrong side, attach the bias flying to the lower front.
  7. Stitch shoulder seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  8. Stitch shoulder seams of neckline facings. Press allowances open. Overlock the outer edge. Place facing pieces right sides together onto the main garment and stitch the neckline edge. Clip allowances at curves, turn facings to the wrong side, straighten, and press. Topstitch along the neckline 0.5 cm from the edge.
  9. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the armhole length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the armhole edge right sides together and stitch. Clip allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  10. Overlock the left side edges separately. Stitch the left edge from the armhole to the zipper mark and from the zipper mark to the bottom. Press allowances open. Insert the concealed zipper.
  11. Stitch the right side edge, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  12. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press it to the wrong side, and topstitch.
