Tech. Description

Sleeveless Jersey Maxi Dress

A women's sleeveless pull-on maxi dress for medium-stretch knit fabric, with a bodice and a gathered skirt joined at the waist over 0.5 cm elastic, and a round neckline and armholes finished with knit binding.

When To Wear

  • In summer for everyday wear and travel, with sandals.
  • On holiday or at the beach, with a cardigan or denim jacket for the evening.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Relaxed bodice gathered slightly at the elasticated waist, flared and gathered skirt.

Length: Maxi, to the ankle.

Neckline: Round neckline finished with a 4 cm bias binding folded in half and topstitched to the inside; the neckline is bound before the second shoulder seam is closed.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, armholes bound in the same way.

Front: Upper and lower front each cut in one piece on the fold; no closure.

Back: Upper and lower back each cut in one piece on the fold, no centre back seam.

Waist: Skirt gathered and joined to the bodice; elastic (waist measurement minus 5 cm) stitched, stretched, onto the waist seam allowance.

Finishing: Hem turned up 2 cm and stitched with a twin needle or coverstitch; seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on an overlocker.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Four pieces, no closure; the knit binding and stitching the elastic evenly onto the seam need care.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabrics of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Knit bias binding
  • Elastic, 0.5 cm wide

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: hem allowance — 2.0 cm, other seams 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need.

  • From main fabric:
    • Upper back – 1 piece with fold
    • Lower back – 1 piece with fold
    • Upper front — 1 piece with fold
    • Lower front — 1 piece with fold

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Stitch the right shoulder seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  2. Cut (if not ready-made) bias tape 4 cm wide, equal to the neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias tape in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the bias tape along the neckline edge on the right side and stitch, then fold the tape to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece.
  3. Stitch the left shoulder seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  4. Cut (if not ready-made) bias tape 4 cm wide, equal to the armhole length + 4 cm. Fold the bias tape in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the bias tape along the armhole edge on the right side and stitch, then fold the tape to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold onto the main piece.
  5. Stitch the side seams on the upper and lower parts of the garment, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  6. Along the upper edge of the lower of the garment, sew a basting stitch with loosened upper thread and gather. Stitch the upper and lower parts together, press allowances and overlock.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  8. Cut a piece of elastic tape equal to the waist circumference minus 5 cm and topstitch it, stretching, onto the seam allowance where the upper and lower parts are joined.
