Tech. Description

V-Seam Knit Dress

A women's sleeveless midi dress in knit fabric, with a scoop neckline, a bodice ending in a V-shaped seam below the waist, and flared side panels set into angled seams front and back. Neckline and armholes are finished with bias binding.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own with sandals.
  • In spring and autumn with a cardigan or short jacket over it.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bodice and hips, flaring below through the inset side panels.

Length: Midi, below the knee.

Neckline: Scoop neckline front and back, bound with 4 cm bias binding folded in half and topstitched along the fold.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes bound in the same way as the neckline.

Front: Upper front cut on the fold with bust darts pressed upwards, joined by a V-shaped seam to the middle front (cut on the fold). The two lower front pieces are set into the middle front with a clipped corner and give the skirt its flare.

Back: Upper, middle and lower back, each cut as a pair, with the same V-shaped and angled seams; centre back seam with an invisible zip at the top.

Finishing: Knit seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch or on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker; hem turned up and topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Angled panel seams with clipped corners and a V-point matched in knit fabric, an invisible zip in a knit, bias-bound neckline and armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium stretch, made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Invisible zip
  • Bias binding 4 cm wide (ready-made or cut), for the neckline and armholes

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance – 1.5 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Upper Back – 2 pieces
    • Middle Back – 2 pieces
    • Lower Back – 2 pieces
    • Upper Front – 1 piece (on fold)
    • Middle Front – 1 piece (on fold)
    • Lower Front – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.
