Tech. Description

Cap Sleeve Peplum Blouse

A women's blouse at hip length with cut-on cap sleeves, a round neckline and two front pleats stitched down from the chest and released below the waist. Only two pattern pieces, with bias-bound edges and no fastening.

When To Wear

  • In summer and warm spring days, with straight skirts or trousers.
  • At the office under an unbuttoned jacket or cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bodice; the front widens below the waist where the pleats open.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Round, wide neckline finished with a folded bias binding turned to the inside and topstitched along the fold.

Sleeves: Cap sleeves cut in one with the front and back; armholes finished with bias binding.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, with two pleats stitched from the top to a mark, pressed and secured with a horizontal bar tack at the mark.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with no centre back seam and no darts.

Closure: None; the blouse goes on over the head. The neckline is bound before the second shoulder seam is closed.

Finishing: Hem turned up and sewn by hand with blind stitches.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two pieces and straight seams; the only careful steps are the stitched pleats with bar tacks and the bias binding on the curved neckline and armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Dense blouse fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding, 4 cm wide (ready-made, or cut from the main fabric), for the neckline and armholes

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 2.0 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece with fold
    • Front – 1 piece with fold

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the right shoulder seam. Finish the allowance and press it towards the back.
  2. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the neckline edge, right side facing, and stitch. Clip the allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  3. Stitch the left shoulder seam. Finish the allowance and press it towards the back.
  4. Stitch the front pleat from the top to the mark. Form a box pleat on the front and press. Stitch a horizontal bar tack at the mark level, securing the pleat depths.
  5. Cut (if not ready-made) a bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the armhole length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the armhole edge, right side facing, and stitch. Clip the allowances. Fold the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam.
  6. Stitch the side seams, press the allowances towards the back and finish.
  7. Finish the hem allowance, press it to the wrong side, and hem with blind stitches.
