Short Sleeve Surplice Top with Gathers

A women's top for medium-stretch knit fabric, with a wrap-effect upper front of two overlapping pieces, a lower front gathered into the seam below it and short set-in sleeves.

When To Wear

  • Spring and summer, with jeans, trousers or a straight skirt.
  • Everyday and office wear under a jacket or cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the shoulders and bust, falling loose from the gathers to the hem.

Length: Hip length, with a curved hem.

Neckline: V-neck formed by the overlapping upper fronts, finished with a 4 cm bias strip folded in half and topstitched.

Sleeves: Short, set-in.

Front: Right upper front lapped over the left and joined to a lower front cut on the fold; the lower front is gathered along the straight section of its upper edge. No closure.

Back: Centre back seam.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch and overlocked; hems topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Stretch seams, a bias-bound neckline, a gathered seam and set-in sleeves; no closure.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-stretch knit fabrics in natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding, 4 cm wide (or cut from the main fabric)
  • Twin needle for the hems

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Upper front – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When overlocking, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock the allowance and press towards the back.
  2. Stitch the shoulder seams of the back and the upper front. Overlock the allowances and press towards the back.
  3. Cut (or use ready-made) bias binding 4 cm wide and a length equal to the neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding with the neckline edge, right sides together, and stitch. Fold the binding to the wrong side, clip the allowances, and topstitch along the fold to the main piece. Press the seam. Overlap the right front over the left and secure at the bottom edge.
  4. Along the straight section of the upper front edge, stitch with loosened upper thread and gather. Attach the upper to the front. Overlock the allowance and press upwards.
  5. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Set the sleeves into the armholes, press allowances and overlock.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and sleeve hem, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
