Cut-On Sleeve Dress with Gathered Skirt

A women's floor-length dress with a high waist seam, a gathered skirt on the front and back, short cut-on sleeves and a round neckline finished with a facing. An invisible zipper closes the centre back seam.

When To Wear

  • Summer days and holidays: the loose gathered skirt and short sleeves keep it airy.
  • Everyday wear with flat sandals or trainers, or with a cardigan on cooler evenings.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted upper bodice with a seam above the natural waist and a full gathered skirt below it.

Length: Floor length.

Neckline: Round, finished with a front facing and a two-piece back facing, both interfaced.

Sleeves: Short sleeves cut in one with the upper front and back; the shoulder and side seams are stitched together with the sleeve edges.

Front: Upper and lower front each cut on the fold, joined by a gathered seam.

Back: Centre back seam with an invisible zipper; the lower back is gathered into the upper back.

Skirt: Gathered along its upper edge into the bodice seam, front and back.

Finishing: Seam allowances overlocked; hems of the dress and sleeves overlocked, pressed up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Gathering, an invisible zipper in the centre back seam and a neckline facing; no darts, collar or set-in sleeves.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics in natural or blended fibres.
